Dueling Conflict

Dueling Focus
     Characters may use weapon proficiencies to purchase Dueling Focus on a 1:1 basis. Characters may spend a maximum of up to one-half their weapon proficiencies on Dueling Focus (round down). Characters specializing in single combat of this sort may also receive Dueling Focus from various feats, class abilities, or character options.

Challenges
     Each round of the duel each character may secretly declare a single dueling strategy he will use that round before making an opposed (base attack bonus + Dueling Focus) check. After the rolls are made, reveal the characters' strategies, if any, and compare the check results. The winner gains 1 success. If the result is tied, neither character gains a sucess.

Victory
     Victory is achieved when a character amasses a number of successes equal to their opponent’s Dueling Focus or 3 successes, whichever is greater.

     The terms of a duel are typically established at the outset. In a duel to the death, the losing character is immediately killed.

 

 

Basic Combat Feats

 

Centering the Spirit
      Your poise and precision are impressive… and deadly.
      Prerequisites: Base attack bonus +1 or higher, base defense bonus +1 or higher.
      Benefit: You may double one attribute bonus you receive for a single attack check, damage roll, or saving throw. You may gain this benefit a number of times per scene equal to the number of Basic Combat feats you possess, but not more than once per round.

 

Find the Center
      Prerequisites: Wis 15+, Centering the Spirit.
      Benefit: You gain the following strategy which may be used in any Dramatic conflict.
      Perfect Focus (strategy): Once per dramatic conflict, accept a -8 penalty to your check. If you win this challenge, you gain a +5 morale bonus to all challenges for the remainder of the conflict.

 

 

 

Melee Combat Feats

 

Crane Technique
      Prerequisites: Cha 15+.
      Benefit: Your Dueling Focus increases by 1. You gain the following strategy.
      Overwhelming Grace (dueling strategy): Once per duel, spend an action die. The next time you win a challenge during this duel, you gain an additional success.

 

Mirror Technique
      Prerequisites: Int 15+.
      Benefit: Your Dueling Focus increases by 1. You gain the following strategy.
      Matching Focus (dueling strategy): Once per duel, accept a -2 penalty to your check. If you win this challenge, your Dueling Focus increases to equal your opponent’s current Dueling Focus if it is greater.

 

Red Leaf Technique
      Prerequisites: Dex 15+.
      Benefit: Your Dueling Focus increases by 1. You gain the following strategy.
      Split the Leaf (dueling strategy): Once per duel, accept a -2 penalty to your check. Your opponent must roll an additional die for this challenge and may not select the highest die.

 

Rising Sun Technique
      Prerequisites: Dex 15+.
      Benefit: Your Dueling Focus increases by 1. You gain the following strategy.
      Return of Courage (dueling strategy): Once per duel, accept a -4 penalty to your check. If you win this challenge, you may use any other strategy you have already used during this duel 1 additional time during this duel.

 

Single Strike Basics
      Prerequisites: Dueling Focus 2+.
      Benefit: You gain a bonus to your initiative checks equal to your Dueling Focus. Further, during a duel, if the results of a challenge are tied, you gain 1 success. Finally, you gain the following strategy.
      Rise to the challenge (dueling strategy): Once per duel, accept a -4 penalty to your check. If you win this challenge, you gain a +1 morale bonus to all challenges for the remainder of the duel.

 

Single Strike Mastery
      Prerequisites: Single Strike Basics, Dueling Focus 4+.
      Benefit: You gain a bonus to your melee damage rolls equal to your Dueling Focus. During a duel, you roll 2 dice for each challenge, keeping the result you prefer.

 

Single Strike Supremacy
      Prerequisites: Single Strike Mastery, Dueling Focus 8+.
      Benefit: You begin each duel with 1 success. You gain the following strategy.
      A Single Stroke (dueling strategy): Once per duel, accept a penalty to your check equal to twice your opponent’s Dueling Focus. If you win this challenge, your opponent’s Dueling Focus is reduced by 2 until the end of this duel. If you now posses successes equal to or greater than his Dueling Focus you immediately win the duel, even if you have less than 3 successes.

 

Spell Duelist
      Benefit: Your Dueling Focus is set to one-half the number of High Magic feats you possess, rounded up, if not already higher. Further bonuses do not increase this value. When you take this feat you may reassign any weapon proficiencies you had previously spent on gaining Focus.

 

Shadow Duelist
      Benefit: Your Dueling Focus is set to one-half the number of Covert feats you possess, rounded up, if not already higher. Further bonuses do not increase this value. When you take this feat you may reassign any weapon proficiencies you had previously spent on gaining Focus.
