Hi,

just made our first chars on Friday and one of the questions was:

Is it correct that a Character could use the Resource Skill Pick - Skill Training and keep the additional Skillranks forever?

What if he uses the pick to gain 4 ranks in a Skill and than later advance it via a new Level to 5 or more ranks? Is this legal?

Thanx
Tom

If it's a mission pick you only keep it until the end of the mission. So at the end of the mission the skill points are gone.

If however you spend a possession pick on it then I would say you'll have to consider the character as not having the pick when leveling up.

Skill training can't be taken as a possession.

Also, near as I can tell, you can only have up to rank 4 in a skill via skill training. It's basic training not a replacement for actual experience (leveling) or training (the "Training" feat covers this well).

Where is this? I've been looking on possesion restrictions of this sort but not found any. In fact, I seem to remember some example form signs and portents specifically allowing it.

You may only benefit from one Skill Training pick at a time.  It may be taken as a possession but you decide at the Intel Phase how it will be applied.  It is not considered permanent ranks, so the skill can not be raised in any way above 4 ranks.  Basically it is a resource for characters to get some basic training in some skill that you do not possess.  Maybe the mission needs have you parachuting and you have no ranks in Acrobatics.  Maybe you are going into a country and you need some ranks in Culture to get around.  And on and on.

Our group really likes these rules, and we use them every mission.

- Refresher training at the pistol range.

- 2 Days at a private skydiving school.

- A week with a Soviet Defector, for language and culture refresher.

One of the best things going for 2.0, feels like the real deal.

Since they're ranks an interesting tactic is to have 3 ranks in cultures and just put 1 point from skill training to pick which ever culture focus you need for the mission.

Though on a related note I've been wandering if allowing picking an additional focus for 2 skill points would work, for those characters than insist on knowing every culture (or driving every vehicle etc).

Several members of my group take Feat Training - Depth of Study (a caliber one resource pick) almost every mission. Two characters have it in their posessions (which I said earlier, I was trying to find out if it was legal) defined as an extensive library of language tapes and books.
This is usually used for whatever culture they need that game, though in one game several members also took science demolitions.

IT does seem the most efficient way of having whatever language you need.
