Well, see.. there's a very distinct difference here though.  Sengoku, if I recall right, was an 'add-on' book.  A supplement to the various games, if you will.  FantasyCraft is a direct competitor of WOTC's D&D.

Even being an add-on isn't a guarantee.  Back a bit, there was a deity add-on called Primal Order.  Among the things that torpedoed it were the lawsuits from companies that had 'conversion rules' in the back.  Something about profit infringement.  Anyway, my point is that in today's lawsuit-happy economy, even the OGL might not protect as much as we'd like it to.

Also, I'm not sure if you shouldn't drop half the levels when converting from DnD.  Spycraft characters are VERY flexible and extremely hoss compared to DnD classes.  That said, I've found re-envisioning to be a rewarding experience.  Not that I'd do it every game session, but it isn't really that bad.

I think the conversion should be a 1-for-1 XP conversion only because new players to the system need to learn it from the ground up and not the top down.

With all the options available in our system, it might be even better if they created a 1st level character to begin with.

Until two months ago when I saw it at a FLGS while visiting friends in Dayton I wasn't even aware there was a Spycraft 2.0.  I picked it up but didn't really have a chance to look through it until now.  I like it.  I've bought/downloaded most of the PDF's though I've only just finished printing them all out (quite the chore).

I bring this up here because I'm one of the, apparently few, people who so far is not impressed at all with the direction that D&D 4E is taking.  I've been running my games in a homebrew world since early 2E; basically right after they ruined and then dropped Greyhawk.  I'm not willing to give up my homebrew at this point (it's been developed and used for so long that I doubt I ever will) and, at least as of right now, 4E is not going to meet my needs (or desires).

As a big fan of GURPS and Hero System's toolkit approach I was pleased to see Spycraft take a similar philosophy; less work to convert to as well.  Is anyone playing a fantasy campaign with Spycraft right now?

Welcome aboard. Smiley

I'm not particularly impressed with $e at the moment either, but I'm willing to withhold final judgment until I get a chance to see it in finished form. I'm also realistic enough to know I'll wind up buying at least a PHB, if not the whole core, if only to be able to speak from an informed position when I say it's crap. Wink

Is anyone playing a fantasy campaign with Spycraft right now?

Playing? No. Planning? Yes.

Mostly I'm stalled at the moment until FC drops or the Crafty Four shows the Mage in a preview. This is mostly because I want to use Elements of Magic: Revised as my magic system and the ideas I have for making it work will be helped out a lot by seeing the non-specialist caster class. I'm also hoping that FC has more reasonable and accurate weights for melee weapons. Wink

i'm currently running a fantasy campaign (as i've alluded to earlier). warring city states, magic teleports gone awry, trips into the aether....all fun things. oh, and there's a brewing war coming, as well.

i've found that SC 2.0 works fairly well as is for the most part (looking forward to the other casters in future chapters of spellbound, to be sure)

Admittedly, I'm mainly comparing myself to the people on the WotC and ENWorld forums which have a very strong pro-4E leaning.

I'm just glad to have found a game that I can move to and convert my homebrew over.  Except it's not out yet.........KHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNN!   Wink

And some of us are fairly vocal about it. Though in my case the dislike is linked as much to corporate decisions in regards to licenses (both for 4E and those that the recently called back from other publishers) as it is to the game itself. I am actually more interested in Paizo's Pathfinder RPG than I am in 4E. (Or, yuck, 4dventure! Gods, I hate 133+ and its hideous offspring.)  Angry FantasyCraft and Pathfinder will be my choices for new games to get in the next year or so. Smiley

If you go into the wilderlands of E.N.World you will find a quite vocal minority who are not at all in favor of what they have heard in regards to 4E.

Having run the 4th ed Demo adventure (from DDX) six times over the last two weeks, I do like how the game plays... speed, lots of options for players as part of the core, etc.

BUT, I'm not sure how many people will convert over to it at the start.

I do love Spycraft and am looking forward to Fantasy Craft and such, and have downloaded the v1 and v1.1 of the Paizo D&D.  But, I do have lots of stuff I'm not getting to run/play now with more coming (Mongoose Traveller, GURPS 4th, etc).

I'm one of their demonstrators so I get lots of stuff free from WotC and will have to support 4th ed, so that muddles the mix for me just a little.

been awhile since a response, and might as well say what I wish to say.

I was really hoping Fantasy Craft would come out around the time of 4th edition. Kinda thought for competing purposes or something foolish thinkig like that.

Otherwise I can't wait till this comes out, sounds to be truly a great book!

I'll probably convert to Fantasy Craft, if 4th ed is not to my liking as much, and If I like Fantasy Craft (obviously). However since the books are out, and I own the books (except the MM), we'll see how much our group and I will like 4th edition.

I have big hopes for Fantasy Craft, especially after reading 4th edition, which really put me off. I did like the character system in 4th edition, but the focus on miniatures.. well, it was too much, since I never use them.  Angry

And with the Master Craft rules included in Fantasy Craft... that I can like. Spycraft 2.0, in my opinion, was a bit too complicated. But the character system is great, though. Smiley

Interesting as that's the part that turned me off the most.

As for offical conversions: Has anyone read the monstrosity called the GSL?  It's hideous.  I think it pretty much puts the nix on any official conversions.
