At least with DP9's Silhouette system you could get a tank-on-tank kill at 1 klick. Try that with Battletech.

I do recall reading that Warhammer 40K and Flames of War deliberately decided on the range compression.  One of the things that I liked about Warzone was the smaller amount of range compression.

But even with all the sensor this and stabilization that, a mech with a heavy autocannon should be able to hit another mech from two klicks from an ambush even if it can't pull it off while they're both running around.

For games like 40k its kind of necessary unless you want either a) to play on a 10 x 20 foot table, or b) Always be in range with every weapon.

I know OGRE Minis handwaved it due to a mix of ECM and the conceit that the table was a holographic reprentation of the battlefiedl. Essentially, the mini's were out osf scale with the terrain.

Similarly Jovian Chronicles in all three systems hand waved the space ranges due to ECM. I actually think JC was the only Mekton setting to ever explain why combat happened so close. Wink It certainly was the first.

OGRE was out of scale with the terrain to the extent of painting a dot on the model to represent where the tank actually was, with all measurement taking place from that one tiny dot.

As an aside - a friend of mine went to Dragon Con a few years ago and played in an OGRE miniatures battle. Being very impressed with the lovely camo paint-jobs on the miniatures he took photographs. In almost none of the pictures can you actually see the tanks. Tongue

Yeah.  That's why my Combine army was painted gold and black. I mean, it IS a holotank, so why on earth would the commander set ti so he couldn't see the units involved.

There's also the question of exactly what good cammo would do on the battlefields of the last war. Especially on a cybertank. Smiley

We used to play Jagdpanzer, a set of WWII rules for micro armor armor, on a sand table. After one game the only way we found five Hetzers painted in a redish brown, yellow brown and grey dot camo pattern was to remove all the lichen then had to screen the sand for one we still couldn't see!
