Quote
I'm pretty hip to movie scores but game music is somewhat fresh territory for me.
Well there are a few game scores worth mentioning:
C&C Renegade - my personal favourite. This score has is a fast paced techno industrial piece perfect for any action game. The only drawback -> it has to be ripped from the gamefile (which itself is quite easy Wink ).

C&C - Red Alert 2 - this one is similar to the Renegade soundtrack but a bit more subdued and "technical". It has more calmer pieces more suited to infiltration or technological themes. Two tracks (HM2 and Grinder) are very suited to serve as a soviet theme music.

C&C Tiberian Sun - Another tech heavy score. This time it's a rather slow and gloomy one. The track pharotek reminds me of a cross between 21st century technology and ancient egypt.

Dune - Spice Opera - A very old score, but one of the best ever created for a game. Due to copyright issues the current status of it is unknown, the musician himself encourages "free" downloads. The score itself is a mix of electronic music and synthesized instruments. Best tracks - "Free Men" and "Sign of the Worm"

Emperor - Battle for Dune - Another file-rip. This time it's a 3 cd package containing 3 different themes:
Harkonnen - a guitar heavy cd filled with great solos. Some are ponderous and bombastic (House Harkonnen), while others are quick and aggresive (Defenders of Arrakis)
Ordos - a techno cd with a lot of keyboards. The theme revolves around sneaky tunes that almost jump the listener from behind to knife him.
Atreides - A somewhat high-nosed cd, but what did you expect. Some good guitar here and there plus a smattering of unidentifed instruments.

Jade Empire - well this score has anything you need for a chinese ming period campaign. But if china is not your cup of oolong then look at the next entry.

Medieval II: Total War - "the" score if you want something aggresive with a medieval flavour. It contains lots of tracks, from classic medieval (great harp music) through mediterranean and arab to far off yucatan. The music is great but I advise to get the following too.

Medieval II: Kingdoms - the campaign pack packs an even better score. Brittain has a very celtic/high medieval theme, the frontend track (Dream of Albion) is very impressive. The crusades have a slight arabic feel, but they are sometimes a bit egyptian in feeling. The new world music is very indian in feeling, more native northern tribes than the maya or aztec nations. The teutonic music is very militaristic, great drumming along with a few catchy tunes make for a score perfect for a WWII game.

Shogun: Total War (plus expansion) - I'll cover both the expansion and the main game. The music for both is great, the japanese is very climatic and does not limit itself to taiko drums, the mongol one has a "horde" feeling which is hard to describe.

Warcraft III + Frozen Throne -  a great in-game score with a very climatic selection of music. Sadly it fits only fantasy games, at least in my opinion.

Don't forget WoW and Burning Crusade soundtracks, if you rip the MPQ file you can get even more music.

Sorry, but I don't play MMORPG's. They are inferior to classic RPGs.

I'm looking for a theme similar to Snake Eater's opening song, with that "bondesque" feel for World on Fire, any sugestions?

I'm a huge fan of the PS2 Bond game..Everything or Nothing. Best Bond movie by Pierce Brosnan Cheesy, the voicework in this game is spectacular. Anyway, not to everyone's taste but...

Mya's Everything or Nothing is one the best Bond themes ever.

"Bond on Bond" from the quartet Bond is better. Then there is "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" from Propellerheads, which is also great.

This is a point that could be debated endlessly but I am inclined to disagree (or, if you prefer, disinclined to acquiesce) with any statement that says all of group A (a rather sizable group) is inferior to all of group B (which is an even larger group).  I am fairly certain I can find at least 1 MMO that isn't inferior to at least 1 Classic RPG.

The point was the quality of the music and not game taste. Anyway if you like Warcraft III music, it has the same composers and more. Which shouldn't be discredited because of your videogame preferences if you really like a music style.

My two cents.

Hmmm, one I recently encountered that I will be using at some point in the future - when I have a game set in the rural U.S. -
Laura Love Brogan, a very interesting song about a dowser.

I can so see this song being used in the opening credits of a James Bond movie.  I can even see the movie having the title "Nobody Loves Me".  It was almost the theme song for my last Spycraft campaign, but I didn't remember which band played it until after the game was already going.

Oh, and in case you are like me, let me link the lyrics.

Preach it brotha! That was a dark, frakking day.  Sad

And Bill - You're right, Sour Times/Nobody Loves Me is a great Bond movie intro. It's a constant fallback when working on Spycraft.

okay, a few songs i like to use...some are strange, some obvious...

Come with Me, PUFF Daddy,Godzilla Soundtrack. i love this song.
Black suits coming, MiB2, the instrumental version, it's published in a single. I used that as the opening theme for my Plan9 missions.
Some songs from the the Fast & the furios 3 tokyo race. some of them have been used a lot for chases, but there's a reason for that...
Thunderstruck, ACDC. Luv it.
The montage, Spy Game. I like this soundtrack a lot, but i remember that one quite fondly. Also the Metal gear solid ost by gregson williams, similar to that one..
One spanish group, Dover. They sing in english, and are quite good. Some songs are fast and great for action scenes...
elevation, u2
song2, blur. short, but...
i used Yann tiersen score for Amelie once, but i cant remember when or for what...
matador, fabulosos cadillacs
sinnerman, nina simone, thomas crown affaire. great.10 minutes long
woke up this morning, the soprano opening theme
trainspotting ost so much to choose here
normal town/better than ezra and downtime/fat, an american werewolf in paris ost.
Alias, serenity and Firefly soundtracks.

i have remembered also Fifth element, Sky captain and Hudson hawk ost, not sure if apropriate here, tough. But "swinging on a star" is so damn good...

Edit: Come with me is from puff daddy, not jamiroquay. Awfull memory when i cant sleep...

I love that score (and that movie). It's extra, super wonderful with a cherry on top because the music's so integral to the action.  Grin
