You know how I talk about lots of projects that swirl around that we can't talk about - until we can.

Well there you go.

Yup. With legs so you can stand it up over your games.

Plastic. One piece, including the legs.

The link to the unadorned version was posted on my FB by one of my GMs because I am notorious for my errant dice rolls.  Nolan Ryan has better control than I do.  Clicked and saw the engraved version, thought I would share.

So, is there a story, Pat, or is this just something I stumbled over in the wild?
EDIT: Or do you mean you can't talk about it yet.

This isn't a Crafty production, not exactly. We were approached by the Dice Shield's creator at a recent convention and he offered to make some prototypes to showcase the engraving options. This is one of those prototypes. (Alex and I each have a more advanced prototype that also features our brand logos.)

There will be opportunities to get hold of your own (directly from the creator), though not for a while yet. We'll make noise when they're available.

Been corresponding with the Dice Shield creator and wanted to pass along a brief update...

  • The prototypes Alex and I have received are actually assembled from five separate pieces but the finished versions will indeed be one solid piece of plastic.
  • Should this not matter to you, and should you wish to order your very own unit right now, with or without laser etching, you can do so simply by visiting this site.
  • As I mentioned earlier, there will also be ways you can order a finished, single-piece unit down the line, but those details are still a ways off.

If anyone orders one, all we ask is that you take a pic or two using them and post them to Facebook and/or your other social media of choice. Tag us or otherwise let us know about it, so we can spread the word. Smiley

And now everyone can get a Dice Shield! We've just launched on Kickstarter: http://diceshield.com/kickstarter

We're going to need a lot of help -- the cost of creating the injection mold is pretty high, in the 10's of thousands of dollars. That meant we had to set the Kickstarter goal high ($53000) and the minimum reward level to $50, the same price as they were in the Questo Gizmo Etsy shop.

$50 each sounds like a lot, but here's how it breaks down:
  • $11.30 for shipping to you
  • $5 split between Kickstarter and Amazon Payments fees
  • Leaving $33.70 to fund the mold, pay for the plastic and fabrication, shipping from the factory to the distributor, and packing.
I wish I could have set the reward level lower, and the goal lower, but that's just how much it costs to start mass production.

So what's in it for you? One of the first Dice Shields ever made! And the good feeling from knowing you helped start a whole new company and brought a cool product to market. Every Dice Shield you ever see will exist because you helped get things rolling.

I hope you'll contribute.

Oh ... and once we get to 200 contributors, I'll release a very limited award level: a Dice Shield plus a full set of the Mistborn collectable dice, limited to 4 awards (sorry! Thats all the dice the Crafty guys had left! They may be the last 4 sets anywhere!)

I was going to ask if this covered international shipping, but I see you're shipping within the US only. Are you happy with international backers using US-based shipping services to order your product, or is this a legal limitation (like GW's regional embargo)?

You're perfectly welcome to use US-based shipping services. In fact, I'd be grateful if you'd tell me about some of them!

I've had several requests from disappointed international backers, but my plan to use USPS International Priority Mail is too expensive: $40 for Canada, $60 for Europe and the UK, on top of the Dice Shield price. So if you know one or more good international shipping services that will forward overseas for less, I'll try either to work with them, or at least refer the folks who ask.

Here are the dimensions, if it will help you get a quote:
The weight of the Dice Shield without a box is almost 1.3 pounds. In a USPS Priority Mail box it is almost 2 pounds total.
The size is almost 5.4 inches tall, almost 8.4 inches wide from side to side, and almost 9.7 inches from corner to corner.

In metric units that's approximately 0.9kg, 13.7 x 21.4 x 24.6 cm.

Good to hear! Cheesy

Here are a few I could find:

NZ Post's YouShop: http://www.nzpost.co.nz/products-services/online-shopping/youshop
ShipIto: http://www.shipito.com/
VIAddress: http://www.viaddress.com/
BuyUSA: http://www.buyusa.co.nz/

I haven't use any of these services, so I can't can't vouch for their respective qualities.
