I'll just sit back and see what happens.

If Disney were smart, they'd stay away from Lucas' story line and go somewhere else within that universe.  There are enough books and that universe is vast enough to create new heroes not only in places but time.

If Leia doesn't get added to the ranks of the Disney Princesses, I will be most... disturbed.  Tongue

Well, they would really have to work at it to screw things up as badly as George himself has over the last decade....

Hopefully episode 7 will either scoot forward a goodly amount and draw a line under the sad clusterfuck that the post-Thrawn EU has become or simply outright retcon it.

My preference would be no more Skywalkers or Solos. Time for new heroes.

I'm just thinking of how much use Disney is going to get out of ILM now. They'll be the special effects warehouse with very few competitors which makes me glad that Peter Jackson still has WETA under his control.

As to the Star Wars verse, I hope they jump about 3 or 4 centuries into the future ... kickstart the cycle all over again.

What amazes me most? ... That Lucas actually sold it all off!

Back in the day Disney used to supply animated effects for other movie studios - including those in Forbidden Planet.

I understand that but I am seeing it like bigger banks swallowing up smaller banks ... Disney has practically doubled in size over the past 10 yrs with the Marvel acquisition and now LucasFilm. This means of course that any future Marvel products are pretty much guaranteed the ILM touch which is not a bad thing.

ILM and Pixar are under the same house again.   Pixar was originally spun off from ILM back in the day.

For the record, for 4 billion dollars I'm not at all surprised Lucas signed on the dotted line. Billion. With a B.

Tangent: If only they had paid Sean Connery a billion to come play Mad Eye Moody in the Potter films. That would have been epic.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this. The Marvel purchase showed that Disney is well capable of making adult movies and not plastering themselves obviously over everything.

What really remains to be seen, as everyone has pretty much pointed out already, is when Ep 7 will be set and who will do the writing, whether it will be Jedi Academy based, or spawned off the novels.

2015 seems pretty early to me though to make a decent Ep 7 from pretty much scratch, unless there's a script (or a shell of a script) floating around there somewhere.

It's also a good bet that he's still getting a percentage of the merchandise sales as well. It may only be a sliver, but with the sheer volume of the stuff out there, it's a huge sliver.

Also, it's worth noting that The Avengers 2 is also due to come out in 2015 as well. I doubt Disney will want two huge movies going up against one another, so they'll either own the year (Avengers in April/May and Star Wars in June/July?), sales wise, or move Star Wars back to 2016.

I not terribly surprised.  Disney has been absorbing anything and everything that makes money for years now.  Lucas has been making comments about how the fun is gone for a few months now.

The question is what are they going to DO with the property.

I'm with the majority on this one: get the hell out of the present continuity.  Jump ahead a few hundred years or back a few thousand.  I'd watch the Great Sith War.

Oh wow.   It just occurred to me that this news has given me the perfect basis for a megacorp for my cyberpunk game:  The Disney Conglomerate - for all your entertainment needs.
