9-year old shy kid that doesn't fit into any particular crowd, and has pretty good knowledge of some rather obscure trivia.  Also cartoons, he likes his cartoons.

Popular saturday morning cartoons include:

Superfriends
Scooby's Allstars
Fantastic Four
Popeye
Alvin and the Chipmunks
Godzilla
Daffy Duck

Superfriends, Popeye, Godzilla and the FF have been going since last year (78) at least, but the other stuff is new. Scooby's Allstars replaced Scooby's Laff-a-lympics.

A bit of controversy, as Bugs, Roadrunner, Sylvester and Tweety, Woody Woodpecker, Pink Panther, Hong-Kong Phooey and Batman were all cancelled in the last 2 years.

11-12year old, loves music, inspired by bands like ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd ows a very worn old Gibson, Parents are musicians and as such travels around a lot, never really fits in but he has his music

Mom and Dad have flown to London with Van Halen. The band's management refused to pay for a third plane ticket, so he's been relegated to spending the summer with his Grandparents. He's probably miserable as hell, and knows almost nobody.

This kid is 8 years old- lets call him Greg. His mom died when he was young, he has no memory of her. Dad re-married, but she cannot accept Greg. Nothing he does is good enough for her. Step-mom usually convinces dad that Greg is no good and a trouble maker. Most of the time dad confirms this. The real problem is Greg's older brother. He is good at sports. At all sports. Any sport Greg's older brother, Andy, tries he's very good at it. Greg tried them all, too. Looking for that one sport that he would be better than Andy at. He still can't find it and has pretty much given up. Greg is good at getting other kids to laugh. He's naturally funny, but this usually gets him in trouble with teachers and other authority figures. Here he fulfills his step-mother's prophecy, confirming what his dad suspects- and becomes the "bad kid". He will often accept dares to prove he is not afraid or that he can do it, too. He is a troubled kid starving for positive affection.

Ok, I think 3 people are in a place to start creating characters. Jim? We could do with an older sibling.

Just FYI, if it's 1979 consider:

The first D&D Basic Box set was released in 1977.
AD&D came out in 1978.
Star Wars premiered in 1977 (as did Close Encounters).
John Carpenter's Halloween was released in 1978 (as was Animal House).
Star Trek: The Motion Picture is set for release in December, and Trek itself is re-running on TV.
Also in re-runs would be Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Night Gallery, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

And of course, asthma inhalers were introduced in the 1950s, and by the 1970s were widespread.

Just a thought on a slightly older sibling.  ;)

Not to mention that Battlestar Galactica and Starsky & Hutch ended last year. Nothing good on prime time anymore.

Prime time? How about Fantasy Island and Charlie's Angels?

And while we're on the topic of masturbatory fantasies, Dukes of Hazzard premiered in '79 (and Buck Rogers will arrive in September, but the game's in summertime, right?)

Or even the Love Boat:D

There still isn't.  I don't miss having a television.

[Insert name here] has just turned twelve, and nothing has changed.  Mom and dad are off at some thing halfway around the world.  Actually, it's worse this year.  This summer is full of exile to grandma's instead of Uncle Jim's.

And there went the rest of the brain.  I was thinking a fairly outdoorsy kid, not too sociable.  Knows a few mean/rude/dirty tricks from hanging out with his cousins, but not this summer.

*Sigh* Part of the problem for me is that I'm trying to remember what it was like to be 9, and then I'm like "Oh yeah, I'm trying to suppress those memories."  :P

But I think I have a basic idea for my character.  He's the kid with the overprotective parent.  You know the one, with the Mom who wants to know where he will be at all times, and wherever it is, make sure to wear protective gear at all times young man!  Because of her constantly warning him of the "dangers" of the world, he's a bit nervous about doing anything, but he is also frustrated from not being allowed to do all the fun things the other kids are doing.

But surely a board game would be nice and safe, right?

Mine will basically be the opposite, and when his parents do the responsable thing and drop him off at his grandparents so they can do their work in London...

he doesn't like it... he wants the freedom, he hates being stuck at his grandparent's when his mom and dad are doing what they, and he love... travelling and playing ...

meanwhile he's stuck in this dull old place with his grandparents he doesn't ofte see and people his own age he doesn't know ...

for his grandparents it's fun... they try to spend as much time as possible... which he finds a bit stiffling...

So...

Verbal - 11-12yrs; Rockstar parents off around the world; stopping with Gmaw and Gpaw
Jim - 12yrs; parents off around the world
RusVal - 9yrs; overprotective parents; shy
Mobius - Greg, 8yrs; good kid with a bad rep

Val and Mobius are in the same class at school; they know each other well
Jim and Verbal - unless there are serious objections, how do you feel about playing twins? Unless we make Verbal 10 and Jim 13/14?

Since I don't see a kid with a "bad rep" skipping a grade, that'll probably place both in 3rd, with mine being held back in either Kindergarden or 1st (which wasn't an uncommon practice if I remember correctly).

Also, a good "dare" would probably be staying in one of the abandoned mills at night (most of the mills went out of business during the 70s, so by '79 there should be a few for some pesky kids to sneak into).
