I'm not a father, but I would have done the same thing in that situation.  I wouldn't have set out to kill the guy, but I certainly wouldn't feel bad afterwards for having done so (far as I'm concerned, he well and truly got what was coming).

If the father was black, I strongly suspect he'd be cooling his heels in a cell looking at a wrongful death charge.

I dunno.  Even in texas.. the race card usually gets trumped by child abusers.
