I remember over hearing my gaming group talking about how cool it would be to play a Dryad, and that there was some feat to allow you to make a large species smaller.  I just flipped through my first and second printings and the Adventurer's Companion, and couldn't find anything.  Am I just making up wild stories again?

I don't recall ever encountering a feat that makes characters smaller.  There used to be a feat in the first printing that made characters larger, but it was problematic and got removed.

I must say though, I don't see the connection with Dryads.

Goblin Blood is the only feat that reduces size.  Unfortunately it's got a "Folk" requirement.  Easy to let a player ignore that and reflavour it, or just write a quick feat for Rootwalkers in particular.

There have been at least a couple of homebrew versions of Dryads on these boards, however.

True, Deral's has been through an update, though....

Nymph
Size/Type: Medium biped Fey (1x1, Reach 1)
Attributes: +3 Charisma
   Qualities:
-Fey Traits: Natural animals refuse to attack you and often flee from you unless trained to hunt fey, or are attacked by you or your teammates.
-Base Speed: 30ft
-Comely: You gain the Comely feat.
-Damage Vulnerability (Cold Iron): You suffer +1 damage per die from Cold Iron and are sickened for a number of rounds equal to ½ the damage suffered.
-Iconic Classes: Priest and Courtier are Iconic classes for Nymphs
-Iconic Specialties: You gain 1 less Skill or Vitality point per level (your choice) unless your specialty is one of the following: Adept, Alchemist, Aristocrat, Artisan, Bard, Druid, Enthusiast, Guardian, Mystic, Oracle, Physician, Rogue, Shaman, Witch, Witch-Doctor, or Wylder.
-Light Sleeper: Sleeping is never a terminal situation for you.
-Otherworldly Splendor: You gain Spell Defense equal to your Impress (Cha) bonus, (maximum 20 + Career Level).
-Unearthly Beauty: Your Appearance Modifier increases by 2
-Wood-Bound: Spells that damage or kill plants affect you as if you had the Plant type, if they would still have no effect, they instead act as if they were a Cause Wounds spell of an equivalent level.

Dryad is the same but the first feat has "You may take feats as if you were a Rootwalker and may immediately reduce one of your attributes by 2 to take a Rootwalker subrace," tacked onto the end
