So, a new virtual tabletop, Roll20 has just entered closed beta after a successful kickstarter campaign, and since I put down a couple of dollars I'm in the beta. I've been putzing around in it on my own, but I want to try a proper session, and so I thought about checking if anyone on this forum was interested in giving it a go.

You can check out screenshots and videos on the site, but in short it's an entirely browser-based virtual tabletop, with integrated video and voice chat, built-in jukebox, and other neat stuff. How well it actually works is what I'm interested in testing.

Would anyone be interested in trying it out? For now it'd just be a once-off thing, 2-3 hours some afternoon/evening to run through a couple quick combats and see how the system feels, both in general and for running FantasyCraft.

What timezone are you in? I'm in GMT+1, which usually makes this a no-go for me.

Would love to be in if the time zone differences don't prove to be a problem.

I might be up for trying it out, depending on the timing. I presume your guests wouldn't need to be a part of the beta, correct?

And Pacific Time here. (GMT-7 or 8, I forget which depending on Daylight Savings Tongue)

I would be interested.  I meant to put some money towards it but I was not paying attention and missed the dead line.  I am in the pacific time zone.

Heh. Antilles is in Norway. He and the resident Finns may be the only ones who could make this offer and make it worth your while. You guys ought to con Aegis in, too.

Yep, GMT+1 (well, +2 for summertime atm). Still, if you're ok with gaming at whatever afternoon/evening european time is in your local timezone, I wouldn't say no. It'd be interesting to see how well it does with participants in different continents. Still, if we hauled ass and got ready to play by this weekend, I'm pretty much available most of the day, not just afternoon/evening. Of course, this would depend on when the european timezone-participants are free to participate...

Correct, only the GM needs to be participating.

So yeah, Central European Timezone and late afternoon/evening for weekdays or noonish/midnightish for weekends. MugMug's in, if he wants, anyone else in a decent timezone or fancy some early/late gaming?

Well that's a bummer. I would have kicked in some cheddar to get in on that beta. (For future reference, I'm pretty much always in the market for new digital gaming tools, and folks should feel free to point me their way as they come up.)

This looks suitably system agnostic for me, and easy to use. Those are the two things I'm most interested in, and would appreciate any related feedback from folks who get a chance to test the system out.

Thanks in advance!

Well, if my math isn't all wrong you (and the other yanks on this forum) could still try it out as a player. If we started around 6 in the evening, that'd be what, 10-12 in the morning for you guys? Not the most common time of day to RP, I know, but probably worth it to check if this program's as good as it seems. If not, well, I'm expecting everyone to write up what they thought afterwards, so hopefully you'll get a feel for how well Roll20 will work as a virtual tabletop.

I'd love to, but I just don't have the time just now. In a week or two, maybe, so if you're still running tests then give a holler!

Sure. They've currently got plans for the beta to the end of July, and while I'm not planning on running anything like a campaign or something, I wouldn't mind running the quick-and-dirty, thrown-together-in-half-an-hour little test game I've made a couple of times if the interest's there.

I'm down - sometime from late next week on. Ping me when you have time and we'll chat schedule.

Also, definitely speak up when it goes live to the general public. I'm on their newsletter list now, but in case they miss me I'd like to get my own access when I can.

(For future reference, I'm pretty much always in the market for new digital gaming tools, and folks should feel free to point me their way as they come up.)

Well, iTabletop is selling Lifetime accounts for as low as $9.99 right now (includes three floating licenses). If you scroll down, you can watch the video tutorials. They'll show you what's on offer. If you like what you see, just click the "Store" tab on the navigation menu to see prices.

I am interested in how Roll20 compares. Anybody with access to both able to put together an opinionated comparison?
