In that case is it possible to grapple it and use it's own chain as an improvised garrotte to silence it? Or is that too much to do in the time between us acting and it's summoning of help?

Possible, but at best you're looking at 1 half action to move into position, 1 full action to initiate grapple, then another full action the following round to try and chain-garrotte silence it.  That's a lot of opportunity for a bark.

It is, but the other option is really hitting it with a spear and hope to drop it in one hit. Any suggestions?

*Hint to Shadefire* Druids are notoriously less susceptible to guard dogs

nevermind seems to be survival.

shadefire steps from the corridor, and approaches the growling speaking in soothing tones and attempting to calm the dog.

As Var tenses, certain at any moment that a warning bark from the guard dog could bring the remaining Woses and whatever other unknown defenders down upon the party in these unfamiliar tunnels, Shadefire approaches the animal, the Elf's soothing words and gentle gestures calming the beast.

The animal shows telltale signs of poor treatment -- the chain is tight, the area around its collar is raw, and there are marks, burns, cuts and lacerations, some old and mostly healed, others still barely scabbed over.

Sainrith "It rises my wrath to see a hound miss-treated so. From now on no mercy, no prisoners, and unrelenting scorn." The little fey' features harden and while Shadefire ministers to the hound Sainrith applies spirals and stripes of blue wode to his skin.

Spoiler: show
Wode treated as Mage Armour Oil.

Wallace fishes out a pack of rations and lays out a few strips of dried meat for the poor animal.  "We can't have this thing running loose in the tunnels as they are, but once we're done down here we need to set it free and bring it back to the surface."

Var eyes the dog suspiciously, "Unless you have some way of interrogating the creature, I suggest we move on."

Sainrith says something to the hound in elven dialect of his people. Though you may not understand his words the tone is kindly.

Spoiler: elven-ish • show

"Fear not, the dark days are almost over soon you may run with Fey hounds in the bright moonlight and taste fresh blood."
Shadefire, you may know that Sainrith's people keep hounds and hold then in high esteem.

"It's safer for everyone if we leave it here.  The last thing we need down here is one more unknown quantity.  It could bark or whine and give our position away, and who knows how it will react when we run into its masters.  We leave it here, and we come back for it when this is done."

Spoiler: In the interest of proceeding • show

Either LordKruelos has gone dark, or he's waiting on us.  And I think I know how to find out which it is.

If there are no objections, Wallace will proceed further down the tunnel, letting Sainrith resume the lead and the others fall in behind.
