Over the last couple of weeks, I've been putting together a few HTML-based game aids for the Mistborn Adventure Game. Well, now they are up!

http://www.crafty-games.com/index.php?q=content/online-tools-mistborn-adventure-game

Like it? Hate it? I would love to get some feedback on them, so let me know what you think! I'm open to suggestions for ways to improve the tools, and I already have plans for a few updates. I am also kicking around some ideas for an interactive character sheet, so tell me your feature requests for that (potential) tool, too.

P.S. Can you tell that I'm a wee bit excited?

Allomancy will need the new Stunts mentioned by crafty recently in the Pewter Problems thread - a little check box that either doubles or quadruples the charge times should be good enough to do that. I'd also suggest adding the Short and Long Breather amount for storing charges in Feruchemy, since those are likely to come up regularly as well.

Yeah, I was planning on adding that option when the updated PDF is released. I'm also looking to add options for other allomantic stunts, where applicable.

Good idea! I'll see what I can do.

Does your Nook have a web browser? If so, you can host the files on your own web server. Don't have a web server? PM me and I'll see if I can help you get something set up.

No web browser? Then things become a bit more difficult. I've looked at app development before, but I lack the skill/experience to push something out right now.

The Nook (at least the Nook Color) has a browser.

It should work offline on a computer as is. You may need to allow the javascript to run, but that shouldn't be a problem. I don't have a Nook, so I can't say how it would work offline on such a device, which is why I mentioned running it from a web server.

Or did you mean reprogrammed as an app?

Is the term "Online Tools" potentially misleading? Should we be calling them "Browser Tools"?

(This would of course be my fault, as I just went to the most obvious term when posting the blog post. Wink)

The original name included "Interactive Aids", but that was more to do with trying to create a clever acronym. I was thinking about changing the title to MAGIC (Mistborn Adventure Game Interactive Character) when I finish the character sheet portion.

I can see the case for "Online Tools" being potentially misleading, but I can also understand it being the most obvious term and the first to come to mind.  Of course, changing the acronym from MAGIA or MAGIC to MAGOT might affect reception... Wink

Well, it's been over a week and only one suggestion? I must have got it pretty close to perfection on my first try!  Wink

Still, feedback is appreciated. How are you using them? What could I change to make them better? For example, how would you guys feel about there being two different pages (one for regular/large screens and one for mobile) for each tool? How about a visual representation of the dice?

Also, I thought I'd give a quick update on what I've been working on this past week when I haven't been distracted (I will recover the Apple of Eden!):
The interactive character sheet is coming along. In order to put something in your hands sooner, I'm creating interactive character sheets for the sample heroes available in the book. I have most of it working for the Beck character sheet, but it needs a little more polish before I'm happy with it. That being said, would you guys like me to see about getting the character sheets up as I finish them or all at once when all of the sample heroes are done?

Warning: the following might get a bit boring. I'm also trying to refactor the code a bit. The interactive character sheets use a modified version of the dice roller code, and will likely use some code from the burn calculator and metalmind tracker, too. To give everything a slightly smaller footprint, I'll be stripping the JavaScript code from the HTML pages and placing it in .js files under a "scripts" directory.

Thoughts on any of the above?

While it already doesn't take up much, the leaner code is always appreciated. Especially when I move it to my phone.  Smiley

I haven't had much time to play with it. I'll try to have some feedback for you around Tuesday.

I think it's all pretty useful, but as the guy running the game I don't have much use for it myself. I've yet to pass it off to my group either, but with a new Feruchemist in the party I'm sure he'll make good use of it at the very least.

I'm hoping to make them even more useful. For example, I am working on a way to inform the player which metals are currently burning. This is what I have so far (crossing fingers that the image displays):

Edit:The images look a little smaller than I was expecting...

When the symbol is lit with red, the metal is burning. Those lit with blue are flaring. Clicking on the symbol navigates to the actions available for that metal. I'm considering adding the current number of available charges and seconds of burn time below each symbol and providing a way to do all of the actions from a right-click interface.

Thoughts?

Oh, and before I forget, here is an image of the Beck interactive character sheet:

I'm going to try to get the more complicated sample characters done this weekend. Any suggestions for improvement?

If you have everybody using a computer at the table anyway (something I don't like, personally), would it not be cool to have a central server for everybody? That would enable you to send messages to players, for instance.

I guess it is a long way from an HTML with some Javascript to a full-blown web application. Wink
