Or, in other Cloud Atlas thought...

Bonus points for invoking "Springtime for Hitler".  Smiley  I don't care one way or another about Cloud Atlas, but I'm always entertained when Vaux decides a movie just really isn't worth a fuck.

I never take stock in reviews in which the writer doesn't think the reader has the capacity in which to make an informed decision. It's rather sad, considering that Vaux and I share the same age and many of the same "favorites" as posted on his profile page (if that's to be believed).

Besides it's really a lazy approach to try to dismantle a movie on one point based upon the make up or some other production value. There are some really crappy movies out there (in regards to production value), but they turn out to be great films ("Casablanca" for example). Likewise, there are some movies that have high production values, but they're complete turds ("Prometheus").

I gravitate towards film critics (not movie reviewers) that recognize that their experience watching a film is subjective and based upon their experiences watching other films.

And you guys too. If more than two or three of you give praise for a film, I'll give it a shot.

Meh. All reviews are inherently subjective, except maybe the totally spoileriffic ones at Jabootu or someplace like that. Rob doesn't drop the F hammer often, but when he does it's typically because a movie is just jawdropping for one reason or another (off the top of my head, his F list includes Battlefield Earth, Ballistic: Ecks versus Sever, White Chicks, The Scorpion King, and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry). Movies like that, which really stick in his craw, get special ranting, and his Cloud Atlas review is a new gold standard for hatin'. I love it.

Does it make me want to see the movie anyway? Not really, but I don't care for self-important bullshit at the cinema anyway. Cloud Atlas could have a 100 percent RT rating and I'd avoid it just because of Tom Hanks.  Smiley It's the poetry of vitriol in Vaux's F reviews that's so much fun, regardless of how you actually feel about the movie in question.

Reviews may be subjective, but they don't have to be a pretentious vitriol soapbox used to inflate one's ego. I don't care for both the self-importance of cinema or movie reviewers.

Proof that NZ's film industry isn't wholly concerned with Hobbits and wacky horror: The Cure
