On a side note, the OAV anime that Sunrise/Bandai did in the late eighties is a far better rendition.

The aliens are different, Rico's hispanic instead of Filipino, the power suit's weapons are different, etc but it's a much better done version of the book than the movie.

I'm pretty sure most of the triangle and characters were already written in, and most of it was name swapping.

In the book Dizzy's a guy and dies on the recovery boat after the opening raid. Carl and Carmen basically disappear from the book after Juan enlists.

Other than Juan's crush on Carmen driving him to enlist and Emillio's enlisting after his unamed wife's death there's no real romantic elements to the book.

Frankly it needs some since Juan Rico is pretty flat and boring.

Streakly's Armor and Haldeman's Forever War are much stronger novels. The later especially since it was largely informed by Haldeman's experiences as a combat soldier during Veitnam and his feelings of alienation after the war.

Troopers is a classic though and more than worth the read.

They tried to get Donnie Yen on Expendables 2 but he turned them down.

Both of those are great.  I would pay for a miniseries of The Forever War.  There is too much to try and cram into a movie.  Could you cut enough out of Armor to make a good movie?  Probably, but iffy.

That said, Armor and The Forever War are both very different from Starship Troopers:  The first two are about individuals coping with war, and the last is political theory in the dressing of a novel.  (Rather like Parliament of Whores being a civics book disguised as humor.)  Starship Troopers also holds a soft spot in my heart for being the first book where I found the theme on my own.  (And one that I liked well enough to read more than once and FIND the theme.)

Joss Whedon to Write and Direct Avengers 2

“Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015. As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.”

... a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC.
If they keep this to the less spectacular heroes who need less expensive effects they can concentrate on good writing and make something decent.  Ooh!  How about one that focuses on Damage Control?  All kinds of opportunities there.

There's all kinds of good news in that announcement. Joss not only gets to handle Avengers 2, he gets to return to TV... AND SOMEPLACE OTHER THAN FOX!

The Mutant Enemy has to be happy now... The only question I have is who it will be?

I've long felt that DC belonged on TV. I approve of this suggestion.

LOL ... Krensky, you made me spew Pepsi....

I find it interesting that since Tim Burton's Batman in 1989, only Batman of the DC heroes has managed to gain a good foothold on the silver screen. Now on the small screen, DC has been trouncing Marvel with their animation and of course Smallville.

About time Marvel tried to take some control of it.

The best part (I think) it could serve as an introduction to some second-tier characters, and maybe for sweeps one of the bigger characters can show up in a cameo. Wouldn't that just be a burr under WB's saddle?

With Wedon's propensity for strong female characters and considering TV's budget: Power Woman (Jessica Jones), Spider-Woman, Tigra, She-Hulk, Mockingbird and Echo. However, if I were a betting man, my odds-on favorites would be Mockingbird, Echo and quite possibly Power Woman.

On the men side: Wonder Man, Luke Cage and Iron First. My outside shots would be Black Panther, Doctor Strange and Moon Knight.

A series based around SHIELD could be interesting, though Heroes for Hire/Daughters of the Dragon also works.

If you read the article Pat linked, it says the tentative name for the Marvel TV series is Shield. So, yeah.
