It's a Trap!

Momentary factoid by way of preamble: I live in rural Oklahoma.

My fellow townsfolk are near-universally gun-owners, and I decided it was high time I joined the cult bandwagon community proper. So I have become the proud owner of a nice Remington 870 Pump Shotgun in 12 gauge.

I know there are a number of big-league gunbunnies here on the ol' forums, so I thought I'd give you all this opportunity to tell me what I need to know now (hit me with the proper jargon), and solicit your advice on things like shell brands and whatnot (I do not have the Super Magnum barrel, so am restricted to 2 3/4 and 3-inch shells).

Your thoughts? I know MilitiaJim's probably bouncing in his chair...

I think he has already broken out the neon megaphone so he could shout it to you from NY.

Is there any other kind of Oklahoma? Usually there's rural and sub-rural.

(Like I'm able to talk... I live in Arkansas.)

Ha! I've got two more teef than you, then, redneck!

Oklahoma City an Tulsa are plenty big cities. As a further aside, I grew up in Urban southern California. Moving out here to a town of 7,000 struck me as madness, but I told myself "I'm an hour from a city, in case I ever want to go to a mall or eat at Olive Garden or something." I've lived here 4 years now, and I've been into OKC maybe half a dozen times. I don't miss it at all. Not the road rage, not the panhandlers, not the noise. And now I've got a shotgun. I just need to knock out half my teeth, so I can blend with the visiting Arkansas-types.

I only have one shotgun, and she can't live with me until I move out of this [long string of not nice things] City.  But anyway, shotgun ammo is either A) simple, or B) something I'm just behind the power curve on.

A)  Practice.  Slug + melon or large squash = fun.

B)  Heck if I know.

In pricing ammo, slugs are way crazy expensive. A dollar a shell is pretty steep for my blue-collar pocketbook, though I may have to splurge just to see. Slugs sound delightful.  Smiley

She is staying with one of my Army buddies, and yes, if I had a job lined up, I would be out of here right quick.

I heard NY is a heavily taxed State as it is so it can not be healthy for your paycheck.

It takes the profanity of three languages to express my displeasure with the government of my City, two more to explain the State.

Slugs are, so I understand, for special occasions:  Ne'er do wells besieging your castle, and the occasional 15+ pound watermelon or pumpkin.

Hmm. Just googled Owning a Shotgun in NYC. 250 bucks for permits? Fingerprints and photos on file? To own a shotgun? Feh. Oklahoma's calling, my man. Smiley

I don't care for slugs, mostly because firing them requires me to remove the choke from my shotgun.

Think yourself lucky. In the UK, a shotgun is the only firearm that every citizen has the right to own - in theory. That's subject to a £50 fee, photos on file (but not prints) and a detailed home inspection.

And don't forget that pistols are simply banned outright.

Cheers! Cheesy
