Ok, I hope not to stir up too much with this, but here it goes:

In the SFA timelines, did 9/11 happen? The timeline never specifically mentions it and the setting starts a few months after the attacks. I have been leaning towards it not happening, because a) barring a screwup, the Conspiracy would have stopped it, and b) if it did happen, it would have changed the enviroment and feel of the game. It opens up diferrent avenues either way (maybe a team that was assigned to stop it failed and carry the burden of guilt, etc.) Was just wondering if there is an "official" answer.

Comments or suggestions?

Yup. I didn't focus on it when writing the book, but 9/11's actually where I started with the narrative. There's a story in the forthcoming Extinction Agenda novella (a sequel to Operation: Nightfall that also contains all the side stories I wrote back in the day) that digs into it a bit, explaining partly how 9/11 and the Mouthwash Confession contributed to the POTUS upset . I'll also be dealing with it little in the Born of Ashes follow-up, though I haven't settled on all the details yet.

Indeed he is! Wow, comprehension fail.  Tongue

SFA was of course developed alongside 9/11 (we started work on it in 2000 and it released in 2002), but at the time the tragedy was still a little too raw for fiction in my opinion (note how opinions change over time - such is the way).

Anyway, no - 9/11 was not assumed to be part of SFA when I originally conceived it, and I never dealt with it after.

Which raises an interesting point of how Al Quaeda fits into the SFA landscape -- is its own thing, or is it owned/heavily influenced by a group like PERIL or the Shop?

In the SFA landscape? Not at all. At least not as I envisioned the setting. SFA's rather "pure" in that regard - protected from the madness of the time. In many ways that's a byproduct of the overall approach with Classic Spycraft: keep things simple and harken back to things we all loved as kids. By all accounts, the game and setting were wild hits on that front.

By contrast, World on Fire was a very different animal: politically charged, a direct answer to world-shaping events of the time, and as heavily simulationist in approach as the rules that powered it. Still had a fair bit of narrative deviation from reality, of course, because that's just fun. Wink

Honestly, I loved that mission. Other then the villain's name nothing in it changed my view of WoF (even that didn't change my view, I just dislike puns). I chalked Santa up as an Eternal doing weird things for his own reasons. I liked that it gave an example of an Eternal doing good (or apparently good) for no reason that mere mortals could see, other then he was a nice guy. I'm sure it has some inscrutable ulterior motive, but to your average person he's just the guy who sticks a check for $10000 in the charity box writ large. Does make you re-evaluate all the mall Santas in WoF though... And what exactly he brings naughty people. That and it was a bit of light hearted whimsy which, frankly, WoF needs now and then. Santa Eternal is the definition of unexpected narrative fun.

I never understood the complaints about it.

Same with the Hanukkah one. That felt pure Avengers to me. Not fitting for all campaigns, but more then fitting for the game in general or as a one shot.

Thanks for the response. I think Archer has enough going on without 9/11 or Al Queda in it. Never should forget, but part of the fun is getting somewhat away from real world issues. And the Shop is all the terrorist that I will need.

That was partly my thinking when I put it together. It's already a very rich setting. Doesn't need much more, honestly.
