RIP, James Farentino ...

he was also the portrayer of Roy Schneider's role in the TV version of Blue Thunder with a pre-SNL Dana Carvey as his sidekick pilot and the previously mentioned late Bubba Smith and Dick Butkus on board.

And now Nicol Williamson! Best Merlin ever.

Dammit.
The above may be conjecture, deliberate paraphrase, or outright bullshit.

Ben Gazzara dies at age 81. Some may remember him best in parts of the country as the villain in Roadhouse but the guy has had a hell of a career. He passed away due to pancreatic cancer and was a contemporary of Newman, McQueen, John Cassaevetes, Robert Vaughn, and was even in the Big Lebowski.

His IMDB page: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001262/

Samuel Youd, aka John Christopher (1922 – 2012), died last night in Bath, England, at the age of 89.

As John Christopher he wrote the classic catastrophe novel The Death of Grass (UK 1956), published in the US as No Blade of Grass (1957), and later the popular YA trilogy The Tripods, beginning with The White Mountains (1967).

He also wrote under his own name and several other pseudonyms, as listed in his Wikipedia article.

This one hurts. Christopher (as I grew up referring to him, and still refer to him) was one of the most formative influences in my creative development.  The Tripods Trilogy remains one of my favorite novel series today, above many of the classics held up in our circles as incomparable.

Tonight I am wounded, as is the world. :(

I credit The Tripods with triggering my lifelong love of post-apocalyptic media.

Thanks for everything, John Christopher.

Janice Voss, Veteran of 5 Space Shuttle Flights, Dies at 55

Astronaut Janice Voss, a veteran of five spaceflights and a former science director for a NASA exoplanet-hunting spacecraft, has died after a battle with cancer. She was 55.

“Just got the very sad news that U.S. astronaut Janice Voss passed away last night,” the Association of Space Explorers, an international organization representing more than 350 individuals who have flown in space, wrote on Facebook. “Our thoughts go out to her family and friends.”

NASA confirmed Voss’ death in a statement issued on Tuesday (Feb. 7), saying she had passed away overnight.

Wait, what?  When did that happen?

In the 80s. Boys' Life ran the Tripods stories as a comic serial in the back of the mag for four or five years. It was my favorite section.  :)
