there's been a lot of really good choices, but one series that was left out was Black Lagoon, good merc type stuff.

i would agree that akira is a bit confusing i still liked it though and liked it much better after reading the manga to fill in the blanks.

as for grave of the fireflies great movie but my god it's one of the saddest things i think i've ever watched.

You know what I find interesting?  For all the hype, only one mention of a Gundam series, and I almost missed it.  I can't recommend it, as I haven't seen one that I could recommend.  I'm just amused that a franchise that appears to be incredibly popular in Japan hasn't gotten that kind of recognition in this thread (the awesomeness of the giant robot designs notwithstanding.)

Knowing the boards, I'll be the only person here recommending Azumanga Daioh.  Yes, the series about a bunch of high school girls.  It's absolutely sublime, IMO.

The two Gundam shows I'd recomend are 0080: War in the Pocket, and 08th MS Team, bit the're very much the odd shows out.

I avoided recomending stuff like Daioh as slice of life doesn't translate easily.

I'd recommend Ergo Proxy, Katanagatari (both of them TV Series) and Redline (Movie).

Also, if you are interested in reading some manga, I seriously recommend reading Berserk and any manga made by Junji Ito (specially Uzumaki and Hellstar Remina).

Someone's gotta say it: Urusei Yatsura.
Yes, it's awesome/bad. And old. And poorly animated.
But the 2nd and 4th movies were directed by Mamoru Oshii, and I have yet to dislike (or failed to be delightfully enraptured by) anything he's done.

Other stuff others haven't mentioned.
Dagger of Kamui. Old school historical ninja epic. Very good.
M.D. Geist 1 & 2. GRIMDARK
Genocyber. See also, M.D. Geist.
Devil Lady. Supernatural drama/horror series. Starts slow, redeems itself later. Might make a terrific campaign setting.
Hades Project Zeorymer. Three episodes of solidly black-on-grey mecha action. Sort of like the meaner, blacker-souled grandfather of Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Gal Force. Quality varies, but the original series wasn't bad. Hasn't aged great, but inspires some warm and fuzzies anyway. An early work of Kenichi Sonoda.
Grenadier. I actually feel bad about forgetting this. It's cheerful, it's surprisingly enjoyable, it's not porn -it's Grenadier! A little long on fanservice but with some remarkably likeable characters.

There's surely more, but not that I recall offhand.

Note: The Wings Of Honneamise
I thought this to be greatly overrated. But I liked Akira (Kaori wasn't a bastard), so there ya go.  Wink

I'm sure these are wonderful suggestions.  Lamentably, the local video store clerk looked at me like I was insane when asking about all of the ones I could remember.

So, I'm off to find a local anime supply.

On a positive note, my wife bought me the first FMA DVD for Christmas.

So how's the anime hunting going?
Any of our recommendations pay off?

Don't have a Netflix account but have considered it.  It might stop the wife from buying every movie known to man.

I've watched both Vampire Hunter D and the sequel (Bloodlust).  I was entertained but felt like I didn't "get" it as I was not awed by it the way so many seem to be.  Perhaps it was a case of too much hype to live up to.

Still hunting most of the others.

Straightjacket just popped on my recomendation list, good foidk, FMA like.

Also, Chrome Shelled Regios is fun, although it needs a second series to explain what's going on in the badkground (since the light novels aren't avaioable to my knowledge).

A Certain Index and A Certain Railgun are fun, although I can't remember the Japanese titles... To Maru Index and Railgun, or something like that.

Plus, I can't believe we didn't mention Ninja Scroll. It has nudity and a sex scene, but they serve the narrative and aren't really about sex as much as about the female lead's condition. Decades later it still has some of the most awesome fight scenes.

I would call this thread necromancy; however, given that it is about anime, I suppose super, mega, thread regeneration might be more appropriate.

I have appreciated all the suggestions and am working my way through them bit by bit.

I finished Witch Hunter Robin today and would say that it poses some resemblance to GitS: SAC.  I did find the first several episodes to be ... off in some way; however, I am happy to say that I enjoyed it overall.

I've discovered that my local library has a small anime section and have requested
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Perfect Blue
Princess Mononoke

Just watched the first episode of Gunslinger Girl and I'm intrigued.

I'll keep you posted with my thoughts as I catch up on two decades or so of anime.

Plus, I can't believe we didn't mention Ninja Scroll. It has nudity and a sex scene, but they serve the narrative and aren't really about sex as much as about the female lead's condition. Decades later it still has some of the most awesome fight scenes.

I'm fine with nudity, sex and violence PROVIDED they serve the plot rather than being gratuitous or simply sliding into the pornographic arena.
