Without giving any spoilers away, can I read it before finishing the trilogy or do I need to finish the trilogy first?  IE, if I read Alloy will it give away spoilers to the trilogy, I have read the first book and roughly 8 chapters of the 2nd.

Finish the original trilogy first. There are a few oblique references to characters and events in the trilogy that wouldn't be too spoilery, but the very nature of everything is a bit of a spoiler for the trilogy.
