It's an interesting workaround.  I confess, my initial gut response was hostile (lactose-intolerant, perhaps).  But it could actually be quite a fun way to make it work, and there are oodles and oodles of characters in fiction whose spellcasting abilities are tied to an object of some description.  So, ultimately, it could be quite a good solution; just one which a lot of referees might justifiably refuse.

Now, as for whether you might have gathered the 80 Rep to purchase this outright before turning 5th level... that would depend very much on the individual referee, and how much they hand out.  Obviously, not something that a player could count on.

I confess I'm stumped as to where people are getting 80 Rep.  Minimum I can calculate is 28 (Class Ability 20 + Spell Point Bonus Cool.  Granted that's a bare minimum.

RAW you have to have 1 rank of renown befor you can start buying rep items, with a value cap of total renown x 10. Assuming that you don;t have a specialty that lets you buy a particular renown tree cheaply, that's 30 rep per level. To purchase a 20 rep item, you need to spend another 60.

Which is why purchasing it isn't any sort of valid and it needs to be a prize awarded in play. And again RAW as this needs to be an artifact, such things can only be given in play anyway.

Hm, someone should mention the sample iconic sheets should have their Renown listed more prominently.  As it is people could get the same impression I did.

Whether or not you'd allow abilities granted by Prizes to count as pre-requisites for Expert Classes (I wouldn't), it's DEFINITELY NOT something that a first time player should be mucking with.

Martial Artist/Assassin/Mage/Mist...seems to be getting a little complex for a newbie. You could consider the Shadowdancer Morg and Gentry created, if you're willing to go outside the books it's perfect for the concept of an assassin that isn't the Assassin class. Monk 4 will get her sneaky skills, 2 combat feats, the ability to shrug of a grade of fatigue, and a nice refresh roll (handy for an elf) and reach +1 which is great for striking from the shadows and helps to keep her from going toe-to-toe with anyone.

Shadowdancer is tricky and mobile letting her hit and run and comes with a shadow the same way Infernalist comes with an Imp. That gives her a nice RP option, maybe it's the ghost of her brother who was killed in the slave camp by land dwellers. She's the only one who can see or hear him as his urges on to seek out and take vengeance killers so he can find peace in the after life.

Also, Knife Basics (with daggers or any other knife with the hurdle upgrade) goes great with the Hurled Basics chain, as you need to spend handle item actions.

Rubbish. A first-time GC I probably agree should be wary, but it's exactly this sort of thing that new players should be exposed to in order to sell the difference between FC and the big boys of the fantasy RPG market. (And by the time this lady hits level 4/5, she's not exactly going to  be a noob any more)

Except she's never played the big boys of the fantasy RPG market, so she doesn't need to be sold on the differences. She needs to play a character that's fun and engaging and doesn't lose half their class levels when they drop their magic amulet.

A rite of initiation is a perfectly fine form for an enabling prize to take.
