I have to wonder it it would be possible to have a thriving site where you paid a one-time 1$ fee by paypal to register your user name before being able to post rather than run a captcha.

That way these twits running around spamming the hell out of everything would at least have contributed a $1,000 or so to Crafty's coffers or stayed the hell out.

I could do a buck.
As I know it Something Awful has it's whatever-it's-called $20 lifetime-leet membership and that works.
They've also got a thousand times the traffic of this forum, no offense intended, but $1's still reasonable.

Well, you automatically lose everyone who doesn't want to deal with the protection racket that is PayPal or the ponzi scheme of BitCoin
