We had some setbacks. One guy was sick and couldn't make it. Another guy lost his job and his truck died so he and his girlfriend couldn't make it. Another guy had to come late.

But, we made FC characters last night for three of six players. And it was freakin' awesome.

One guy who also GMs his own game kept saying that was exactly what I wanted to play (a pech scholar keeper--he grew up the child of two inquisitive scholars who died and know he wants to go see what is over the next hill). If I hadn't picked up the AC based on advice in this forum I wouldn't have had the scholar so I was glad I had it on had.

Another guy, who also GMs, was ubergeeked. He kept going over lots of interesting bits and pieces of rules he found that really fit his concept of how a fantasy world should work.

I haven't been this excited to play a game since D&D 3.0 was announced back in 2000.

We only made a handful of knowledge rolls at the end (to help the party decide on which adventure to tackle first) but we had a great time. If we had this much fun creating characters (elf ranger scout and human captain are the other two) I can't imagine how great actually playing will be!

That's really where FC shines. It knows where the fun is for players, and knows how to deliver it in a crunchy, inventive way.

Yeah.. to give you a terrible example of how inventive players can be.. we started creation tonight / tomorrow.. so far..

2 Muppets:  Fozzy & the Swedish Chef
1 League of Legends:  Annie.  (I haven't played that much of it, but the idea she gave me terrified me.)
Jamie from Mythbusters
....and some twisted combination of Indy Jones & Capt. Jack Sparrow.

That's what they're trying to create.. and they'll be 99% successful... because FC has one of the best char generators in existence...

just a word to the wise - one that Pat says he should have put in big bold print somewhere.

"It is not suggested to use ALL of the options presented in a single game."

Our first group took the toolbox of the system, dumped it all on the table and we eached grabbed a handful of pieces and the duct tape. we had:
Infernal Goblin Mage
his brother, Infernal goblin Burglar
Floating Unborn Mage
Lava Elemental Giant Soldier
Dazzling Human Female Courtier (then soldier, then swashbuckler)
Pit Fighting Human Lancer.
Jungle Clutch Saurian Scout  which was retired and replaced by -
Angelic Human Sage / Priest of Fortune

@Kerebrus & TheTSKoala-

You need to do like me and have a large blunt striking implement nearby for when the players give you ideas that r@pe your setting's lore.
I recommend either a kendo stick or a boken. Smiley

LOL.  With at least 33% of the table legally allowed to conceal carry, breaking out the kendo sticks tends to be dangerous. lol.

Sooo... this character concept was enough LOL that I had to share.

Groc-Groc
Orge - Artisan (Food) - Soldier (Monster Slayer if they live that long).
Two Headed - Steel Brave.
Searches the world for rare animals.. to gloriously battle and then cook into an amazing, tavern buffet celebration feast.  AMAZINGLY stupid.  (I think he gave him an 8.  Possibly a 7 or 6.)

Ideally, you have a group comfortable enough with how origins fit together that you can let them either customise existing origins or even create a personal talent or specialty from the ground up for the game. Then again, I love seeing the crazy abuse minmaxers can inflict on a game's mechanics even if I ultimately Gandalf it.

Well, given I've currently got a character in someone else's game who's some 75% homebrewed -- both origins + her expert class -- I'm quietly confident that the game can handle that sort of broadly innovative customisation to allow players to bring forth the character they want.

No kidding?  *whistles*  We're still getting used to FC.  I'm comfortable in it by the book.  I'll need a few more adventures under me before I start to tinker with homebrew.

I read that a world including all of the FC rules might not be the best choice. What I did instead of restricting anything at the beginning of character creation was simply write about the main points of the world and let the players direct things a bit.

For example, drakes didn't have a large role in anything I came up with. None of the players ended up playing one. I like that I didn't specifically have to say no before even discussing characters with the players.

I got this idea from Chris Perkins (4E) who basically allows anything into his campaign. I figured if a player comes up with something good (not min-max or metagame) I'd do my best to fit it in. Give the players ownership of the campaign and world as well.

It worked. I have a good group.

The last three characters are getting created as we gear up for next week's game. A goblin courtier (nasty little git snake oil salesman), a crystal unborn explorer, and Atlas Worldbearer, a giant soldier (former gladiator, hates to kill, tries to keep everyone alive even his enemies).

The goblin is from the Eastern tribes (nictating eyelids like sunglasses over his eyes and he carries a stiletto and a razor for wetwork) and in the homebrew world we have the unborn have taken over the east coast and enslaved the goblins, ogres, and orc tribes. The unborn is part of the goblin's wares (in his mind) and he helped both of them escape the unborn kingdom.

The unborn, for her part, is far too in tune with her emotions and has too much empathy for others to stay with the unborn building their kingdom of logic. She sees the goblin as a good long-term project as he has some good qualities that need to be brought out.

Can't wait until next Wed. The whole group is pumped up.

Not going to lie.. I had to google that.  But yes, same idea.  Though.. Toriko looks alot more intelligent and charismatic than a two headed Ogre.
