I'm not thrilled when GM approval amounts to "uh, sure add 5 points as long as they're a gimpy 5 points" over and over every time the player gets a feat Tongue.

5th is of course the absolute worst moment in their performance curve - still stuck at 1st level, foes 4 levels above them for the first time. It'll pick back up as you keep leveling Smiley. Back in the previous incarnation of the game (spycraft) it was a feat with a minumum level requirementof 6 to specifically avoid the 'anti-sweet-spot' you're in just now.

I think, for me, the answer was to get over an aversion to silly high grades. Attack VIII? At TL -4, why the heck not? Knock yourself out, man.

I'd rather a player be able to spend that XP on interesting qualities, rather than having to pump a lot of points into the Traits just to make the NPC companion(s) numerically competant.

That's where the required DM approval comes in if it's a problem Wink

Entirely this. Nerfing a system for the sins of a few punishes everyone.

Ironic, as you were one of the sinners who showed me what happens when a cute and cuddley 55XP pet grows to 75XP Grin.

Gratuitous image of myself:

Ideally, PC NPC growth would be regulated by campaign quality rsther than altering the rules themselves

I tend to agree. While addressing the gear issue with hard errata would be my preference, the tweaked XP stuff is more something I'm looking to test-bed in Pa'senna with some concrete examples and/or fixed options.
