The Empire State Republic
April 2nd, 2250; 0945 hrs
Soundtrack

After several weeks to rest and recover, you find yourselves settling in quite nicely into your new quarters. The view from the window is simultaneously spectacular and depressing; the 51st floor allows you to look over the rooftops of the intact buildings of Ny City, and across the south edge of the Tangle. On clear days, when the sun rises you can make out a massive crater where the Ark lifted off... with you inside it.

The trip back from New Jersey could've been worse, and aside from a few choice encounters with spooked radrats and a clutch of mirelurks, it was pretty quiet. The destruction wrought by the Ark's crash-landing seemed to have sent pretty much everything scuttling for its respective hole. You purchased passage across the Hudson Swamp with a ghoul named Styx. He poled his reed boat across the sluggish waters and deposited you on the banks of Old Manhattan. It was a pleasant surprise when he only asked a fee of 1 cap each.

Now you find yourselves meeting up in a ground floor cafeteria for the first time in what feels like ages. The beers are (relatively) cold, and the radroach stew is bulked out with vegetables and seasoned with spices that were recently looted from a cache discovered over on the lower east side. It's probably the best meal you've had since you left the Vault.

Before the meal, Marcus says a silent prayer to himself, but otherwise enjoys the opportunity to spend the time with his companions.

Franklin was quite pleased with the situation, as the spices combined with the relatively large variation of meats and vegetables meant he could cook again. Real cooking, not just skewer an iguana on a stick and roast it over an oil drum fire. It's a mystery how cooking is just about the only time he doesn't have that expression on his face that makes him look like he's about 3 seconds away from planting his fist in someone's face, especially when he's so very bad at it. Every cooking mistake there exists, he's made it. Still, he's settled at a 'mostly edible' level of skill, and since cooking's the only time he seems... not happy, but peaceful, perhaps, people don't complain much.

Hondo finishes his soup quickly, and then kicks back in his chair, puts his feet on the table, and celebrates being alive one more time.

Alice munched happily until she realized the meat was radroach, then excused herself to be violently ill in the bathroom.  She returned, and sat quietly as her friends finished eating.

Elsie finishes her food and daintily pats at the corners of her mouth with a handkerchief. Her style of dress seems to be setting something of a recent trend in the Republic. Tex lies on the floor under her chair, eating the occasional morsel that is passed to him. Anyone who looks at him is greeted with a furiously wagging tail slapping the floor.

As you all sit and eat, reminiscing about the good old days (when you didn’t have to worry about being eaten whilst trying to find a convenient place to take a piss), you hear a strange noise echoing down the hallways of this ancient building. Immediately the kitchen staff erupts into a frenzy of activity, cutting off the gas and downing tools. Antoine, the head chef, begins bellowing orders at his staff like an army drill sergeant, and the other patrons begin to leave the room. By the time you catch on to what’s happening, the cook and his assistants – one of which actually vaults the counter – are bustling for the exit, carrying baseball bats, handguns and, in the case of Antoine, a meat cleaver…

So, what do you do?

Franklin sighs, mutters something along the lines of 'too good to last' and heads for the exit, pausing briefly at the coat racks to grab his trusty axes and motorcycle jacket, before hustling after the patrons and staff towards whatever emergency needs dealing with.

"This is why we can't have nice things," Alice said with a sigh as she followed Franklin to the "coat" rack to retrieve her armor, Lady Joan, and her jet pack.

Her donned and gear secured, including the now functioning Red Queen and trusty Jenkins in their holsters, she looked around to her friends.
  "Now what?"

"Fuck, mang, this was supposed to be breakfast," says Hondo. He leaves his guitar on the table as he rises, and gathers his things. "Hey, Antoine? What the fuck?"

"So imagine what lunch may bring."  Marcus stands up rolling his eyes briefly skywards as if to chastise God's timing before following the kitchen staff outside.

You all book outside as quickly as you are able, pulling on armour and readying weapons. As you reach ground level and exit the lobby, Sherriff Armstrong greets you with his plasma rifle held across his chest by its patrol sling. Before you have a chance to ask anything, he mutters "Crew down on the south-west barricade came under fire a few minutes ago. Seems to have blown over pretty quick. No casualties yet, but i'm waitin' on a runner to get back with confirmation. Don't go anywhere - I may need you to shore up a few gaps in the line." You note that he's talking to both you, and a half dozen other locals who all mill around the front doors waiting to see what's going to happen.

Marcus opens his mouth to speak with Armstrong, but pauses for a moment before pointing to a building off to the east and continuing.  "Sir, you don't happen to have a Stealth Boy-equipped squad operating near that building, do you?"

Alice took the waiting time to find a spot a bit out of the way to make sure all her gear is settled and ready to go.  When Marcus commented, she crouched and turned, looking up at the Empire State Building, scanning it with Lady Joan.

"The fuck?" Hondo asks no-one in particular, noticing the same crew as Marcus at roughly the same time. "You see 'em too? Alice, use your IR shit and check out the east face, over there," he points at the area, leaning down so she can sight along his arm. "We might be in some shit."
