Hold up, time out a second.  Sorry, it seems I misunderstood where our position is on the map.

What I thought: We entered from the road from the bottom right.  We then went left, to under where the large grey area in the bottom is, and that the large white building at the bottom leftish was the admin building.  What I was talking about was cutting across the grey area, over the hill, then use the buildings to the left of the plant (the place with the large domes, I believe), then sneak in that way.

What Glim seems to be getting at: We entered from the road from the bottom right.  We then looped all the way to the “tip” of the hilly area in the middle of the photo.  The admin building is one of the buildings on the left of the plant.  And we are currently in it.
Am I correct in that assumption?

Sorry, like I said, PbP rookie, and it’s so much easier when you can just point at the stinkin’ map.   Embarrassed

Either way, we shouldn’t dilly dally.  Even if it happens to be a trap, our mission is to get into that place.

Oh, and the door thing was hilarious.   Grin

Though I feel Pepper wouldn’t mouth “dick head” so much as signal Wister where the duck should go.  Just sayin'.

Even if 'dickhead' was mouthed Wistar would take it in the spirit of 'you silly sod'. This is the way it is used between co-workers here quite often. Talking with Aussies you really have to consider the context and the pitch.  Evil

That's what I understood. I think the stuff at the bottom is actually the transmission substation.

... yep, it is. You can zoom in a bit further on Google Maps. It's the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Plant. It's actually about halfway between SF and LA, a bit closer to L.A.

Well, color me embarrassed.   Embarrassed

Mind if I ask which one of those buildings is the admin building, then?  My knowledge of nuclear plants is about as much as my knowledge of cartography...

Also, edited my last IC post to make it fit my newly found knowledge.

No need for embarrassment. I know a little about power plants because I recently wrote several proposal involving point-of-generation power use and had to read up a bit.

I think the admin building is the white rectangular one above the hill, but I'm not sure that that's the one Glim meant, either. He did say that the "parking lot" which we crossed isn't one in real life, so we may be somewhere completely different.

I'll have to doctor that aerial photograph and add some nice red labels. Next post is up.

Does me stepping on the mine happen before or after I open my big mouth to monologue?  Tongue

For the mine afficionados:

Does the fuse get triggered by removal of weight, or by the action of the spring that catapults the mine up?
If the latter, then we should be able to get out of the mine problem by replacing my weight with a piece of rubble. If the former, then that won't work and the thing will still blow at foot height.

Nevermind. Just saw it's a separate charge that catapults the mine up. Also saw that the original version of this thing just has a 4 sec fuse after being triggered, instead of being triggered upon being released.

However, you have no idea who placed this one, or how long the fuse is. Have fun finding out, 'cos that aerostat's gonna turn you into swiss cheese if it spots you...

In the Terminator reality, do the bouncing betties have timed fuses or do they behave like the mine in the 24 movie, where the guy steps on one and it doesn't blow up til he steps off? I'm not asking about this specific mine, but rather: what would one usually expect? Incidentally, I have no idea if the 24 mine was for dramatic effect only or if it has some base in reality.

A second, more metagaming question: I'm simply assuming that the mine would either kill me or hurt me badly, because that's what it'd do in real life. But this is an RPG, with varying degrees of "reality", and since I don't have the book in front of me and am not sure what the general flavor of the game is supposed to be: is the mine just a way to stop us from dicking around and get to the action (which is somewhat implied by just having the mine hit the guy with the lowest Ref roll, rather than having a Notice check before (though I of course have no idea if there was a Notice check before...)), or is this more of a deathtrap type of situation?

Its the kind that will detonate if you step off it. Its also not the only trap on site.

The mine, if it goes off, will more likely cripple you, reducing your speed in addition to hurting you. It probably won't kill you. Probably. Just hurt like a motherfucker. The mine (and the other traps) are a scripted part of the plot - they grant XP, so they have to be. You all fluffed your Notice checks, and I figured the lowest Ref roll would be the poor schmuck that stepped on it.

And yes, this is a deathtrap situation. And yes, I am dicking with you. I fucking love it.

Thanks, sorry to be a bother.

Next post is up.

Well, crap.

Ok, game time.  Looking at the rulebook, we can disable the mine using a Security (Disable) check (since it is a trap).  Pepper has a Multitool, can that be used as the "mechanical kit" for the check?  If not, can one of us make a reserve gear check to see if one of us remembered to bring one?

Also, I remember from somewhere that if a Bouncing Betty goes of, that one should dive prone.  You will still get hit, but you won’t take the brunt of the blast.  I think a good example was in Modern Warfare 2 mission “Loose Ends” (example at 3:20).

And yes, I am dicking with you. I fucking love it.

Go ahead and do that.  I’ll just cut it off, fry cook it, then force feed it back to ya.   Evil
