The lack of a good list of modern-day minis for use in our Spycraft campaign motivated me to go on a buying spree and I thought I would post my list here in hopes that it helps out some of you. All of my minis consist of re-based Heroclix minis or Star Wars miniatures.

Where do I buy minis?
I purchase primarily from two places online: www.coolstuffinc.com and www.trollandtoad.com. There are quite a few other options but I've found these two have the best shipping prices and options.

What do I use for bases?
I won't link directly to any sellers, but there are plenty of Chinese eBay merchants who sell 25mm bases, which I have found to work best. Search for "BITS 25mm x 50 ROUND BASES". Alternately, you could also use quarters. They are the perfect size for a 1" battlemat and cost almost the same as bases and when you don't need the minis anymore you can get your money back! If you can find a good deal on 1" metal washers at your hardware store, those work too. The black plastic bases definitely look the best.

How do I re-base minis?
Use a hobby knife to carefully separate the feet (or whatever is attached) of the mini from the Heroclix base. From my experience doing about 100 of these you will find some minis slice right off while others are seemingly attached with concrete. Be careful on some minis because it is extremely easy to slice through the feet or snap off the ankles of some of them. I've had to superglue quite a lot of feet back on. I recommend wrapping your thumb and forefingers in masking tape (or some other protection) because it is very easy to poke yourself with your hobby knife on some of the more stubborn minis. Take a break after doing batches of one or two dozen or you may give yourself a blister. Any superglue works, Krazy Glue makes a "hobby" brand specifically for plastics and such but I did not notice any difference from the regular kind.

The Minis

Armed Forces
Every now and then your players cause so much trouble that you just have to send in the troops.

Private Security Team
Every huge corporation needs their own private security force! These guys are amazingly cheap and work really well for when you need a response team that doesn't need to look like police or military. I've got a whole bag full of these guys and I love them.

Civilians
These are "normal" minis with no weapons. I included the Human Bomb because he looks like he's being mugged. Just pretend he's not wearing that mask.  These minis work well in "rescue the hostage" scenarios or scenes where there are a lot of innocent bystanders nearby.

Generic Bad Guys
These guys are amazing as a horde of mooks. A must-buy for any Spycraft game.
(click to show/hide)

Generic "Henchmen"
These guys are separate from the normal generic badguys. They're more of a "movie villain henchman" role due to how they're dressed up. You could almost see most of them fitting right in to maybe a 60's-era James Bond movie.

Suits (FBI, CIA, mysterious guys)
It was fairly difficult to track down decent looking "mysterious black suit" figures. I had to make do with some cheapos that have skulls for heads but they still have quite a nice effect. I absolutely love my Tombstone minis for the "huge quiet private bodyguard" characters and use them the most.

Huge Friggin' Guys (Serial Crushers)
Sometimes you just need a mini of a huge guy. Strong Guy and Gorgon work really well for this. Blockbuster is absolutely huge compared to the other minis but he still fits nicely on a 25mm base (he's about 2.5x the size of a normal 1" mini).

Heroes and Villains (Heroclix)
These minis are excellent for different PCs and NPCs.

Heroes and Villains (Star Wars)
Same as the above but kept separate for those of you that would rather just order minis that don't have to be re-based.

And that should do it! I'm sure there are a lot more than what I've listed but hopefully I help you guys narrow down your searches. As a final note, I only tried to include minis that were very cheap (under $1 each). I may have thrown in a couple of slightly more expensive ones because they were too cool to pass up but I tried to exclude any of the costly ones ($2+). A lot of the Heroclix minis have duplicates in multiple sets that have different names (named figures versus generic ones). There are also multiple versions of the same minis due to the color-coded ring system, so if one of the cheap ones is sold out you may be able to find the slightly more expensive one, which are only 10-30 cents more a lot of times.

I'm an 'old man' I hate plastic. For rpg you can't beat metal. With epoxy putty and painting your own to get the mini that looks exactly like your unique character. Also I paint mini's much better than underpaid workers in 3rd world countries.
I'd complain about crass dollar grubbing but this is a company site after all.  Tongue

Given I've happily modded a clix to look like my character and the number of custom clix out there (but so stupidly overpriced), being made of plastic is no barrier. I'll admit that some of the casting is substandard, but there's enough crappy looking metal minis out there to suggest that is a problem endemic to the form rather thn the medium.

I don't like the clix miniatures. they're just so bendy.
I've got some good modern figures (though the price of metal keeps rising).

There are plenty of good sites around for moderns, but then they are all costly compared to the $1 for clix.  I'm at least partly from a wargamer background so I like nice models.

It's worth mentioning that there are a LOT of good examples in this thread. 14 pages of them (with occasional banter) even.

Not quite modern, but Crooked Dice have bought out a "spy-fi game called 7TV. I don't know a great deal about the rules, but the miniatures are pretty spiffy.

A big thumbs-up to Hasslefree. I like supporting family-operated companies in general, and when they send me candy along with my miniatures, in particular. Smiley

I love the bonus candy. My last package read "Miniatures and sweets" on the customs sticker Grin

Slight necro, but always a relevant topic. I picked up about ~75 miniatures from Battlefield Evolution. They are sized for 1" grid and are perfect for military style Spycraft encounters. The sets also come with tanks, humvees etc.. As far as I know the game is dead.
The minis are pre painted.

I got them super cheap.

I like Reaper myself, especially a few minis that are exactly what my friends want. My DM's boyfriend has a mini that is his character concept to a T.

Cost me 20 dollars for 5 minis, without shipping. I wish I had enough for an army though. Just costs too much. I use plastics for my enemies though, from the 50 dollar Last Night on earth board game.

We mainly use Reaper as well--the Chronoscope line, to be specific.

They're not to big, their bases fit really well within the kind of roll out grids you get at tabletop stores, and they're pewter, which I prefer.

We haven't gotten all our villain/goon minis, so we've been using zombies from "Last Night On Earth"..they're about the right size and there's no question as to who the bad guys are!  haha.
