I was trying to find a place to put Giants in the setting I'm developing when an idea struck me. Why not have Giants and Ogres be the same species, just opposite genders. The nasty, brutish, and short ogres would be the males of the species, very good at killing things but not so good at communicating, even with other ogres. The giants would be the females of the species, taller, smarter, and better able to work with others. Ogre/giant society would mostly consist of groups of females and their children, with males leaving the tribe for a more solitary lifestyle at adolescence. Males would stay solitary for most of the time, and hunt down a different tribe when mating season rolled around. The men would probably stick around just long enough to ensure offspring, then wander off again to live under a bridge or something.

DISCLAIMER: This is an idea for a FANTASY culture based off of a species that has easily noticeable and massively relevant sexual dimorphism. I'm not intending to be sexist in any way shape or form. This does not apply to humans, and I'm not intending to imply that gender roles in humans are genetically encoded. IRL I'm a male who would probably be happier being a stay at home dad than the breadwinner in the family, so take that as you will.

I've looked through the books, and I can't really see anything unbalanced system-wise about allowing giants to take Ogre species feats (which they could do already with Ogre blood, but I digress), except MAYBE Stone Elder giving them a natural reach of 3, but even then I don't see that making too much of a difference based off of personal experience with reach 3 characters (admittedly, a Giant Stone Elder Martial Artist wielding a pike has some awesome range, but not beyond the realm of balance, I think).

What do people think of this idea? Silly? Awesome?

Can't see a problem, as long as you don't have any sexism in the game that the players aren't aware of / expecting*.  I actually think the idea is pretty cool to be honest (and briefly toyed with a similiar idea for Elves / Orks) and system wise I don't think that species feats would even break the game if you removed all requirements from them.

* In a game I played in males were second class citizens in Elven society (which was a knock off Amazon culture).  So my male faceman got autofails for every roll.

I turned female ogres into hags. Just needed a re-skinning and no mechanical change.

In some myths of british isles female mermaids or sea dwelling sidhe (dolphin nation elves) are beutiful but the males are terribly ugly (sea brave ogres?). A very nice example is given in "an encyclopedia of faeries" by serious folklore academic Briggs.
