Tavish sits next to Magdar, smoking a pipe and chiming in on the parts of the songs he knows. On the bench next to him sits a couple of rather sizable tomes he had planned on reading during the trek. Occasionally he pulls a flask of Alchemist's Wine and takes a sip before passing it to Magdar.

[Catela](singing)  ".....Dufrates, himself, was permanently pissed.
Lord Alwyn Deville, of his own free will, after half a pint of shandy, was particularly ill.
And Sir Mateo, they say, could stick it away, half a crate of whiskey every day!"

Hearing the singing and mirth Brindlglib’s ears prick up. He nimbly jumps down to the ground, a distance almost twice his height, landing lightly he trots forward down the line of carts and beast picking up the tune in a whistle. Reaching the orc’s cart he makes a running leap onto the back then weaves through the cook pots and vitals to the cart’s bench, his whistle providing accompaniment to the mirthful singing. He takes a place on the bench his eyes lingering on the pile of books.

Magdar turns his head and is confused for a second until he looks down at Brindlglib.  [Dagral] "Welcome, master gnome.  I nice bit of whistling that is.  I could never master the Dida lilt, but, hopefull, you can understand me."  Grinning wider he clasps Brindlglib and Tavish on the shoulders and asks , [Catela] "Do the two of you know The Tale of the Drunken Dragon?"

As the caravan comes over a hill, a patch of dense forest crowds the road.  Ryar'Bett notices an overturned wagon and an animal lying on the ground on it's side.  There are broken boxes and barrels lying around.  And those might be the legs of a person behind the wagon.

Seeing the wreckage seemingly strewn across their path Ryar'Bett becomes tense. He crouches low on his sinewy legs, pausing for a moment to assess the scene before him. He reaches inside a belt pouch and pulls out his pocket mirror, signalling the agreed double flash of "caution" back to the carts. Stowing his signal once more, he pulls one of his spears from his back and steps forwards through the grasses towards the wagon.

The terrain offers Ryar'Bett every advantage, disguising his profile as he moves. His senses take in every facet of the surroundings, falling into the practiced skills he has honed for the past few Risings. No scents on the wind, grasses undisturbed...

A few steps further and it seems clear that there is little danger present. He turns once more towards the caravan train.
[Catela] "I need help here! Please send for a doctor, we have someone who is injured."

Ryar'Bett then bounds forward, moving to help the form that lies stricken ahead. Lord of the Flame, please let our skills help these folk today.

As the closest walkers in the caravan begin running toward the wagon and the presumed causalities Magdar's wagon crests the hill and Brindlglib spots folk moving behind the tree line.  He pulls on Magdar's arm and shoots a knowing glance up to the old orc before dropping out of sight into the back of the wagon.  Magdar looks confused for a split second before picking up the thread.

He whistles loudly and yells, [Catela] "Ambush!" right as the arrows begin to fall.

The yell of ambush catches Ryar'Bett completely off guard as he didn't notice anything that was amiss.  As he looks up to see who is yelling he sees the arrow bear down on him.

After the first volley an orc and three humans come out of the forest.  Each has bared steel in their hands.  A giant stands up from his blind on the left side of the path with a very large rock in hand.  All are wearing leather armor of some kind.

One of the humans with black hair shot through with white throws back his head and laughs in the most unsettling way.  [Catela] "Pay us the road tax in coin or goods and you can be on your way to your destination.  Pay it not and you can be on your way to your eternal destination."

The threat is very clear but the caravan appears resolute in the face of the bandits.

When the arrows fall and the threat is given, James stops and tries to take in the bandits one by one. He's feeling hesitant and unsure, unable to make a decision as to how to act. It seems the training focused too much on magical opponents, and too little on the more mundane opponents. He remains still until someone else makes a move.

Tavish jumps from the bench with amazing speed and runs headlong toward the closest opponent, glaive at the ready, and belting out a battlecry  [Ateso] Awake the iron in my blood to draw forth the blood of my enemy!!

Making it about 15', Tavish has a second thought and instead begins chanting over his glaive, slowly walking backwards to the caravan, the glaive's blade dripping liquid silver and taking on a vicious edge.

The shock of being surprised is too much for Ryar'Bett, and the arrow that whisks past his arm is the icing on the cake. He stands stock still for several moments but eventually his duty-bound instincts kick in, and he draws his spear once more, ready for action.

The human speaks again, [Catela]"Did you see that charge boys?  Right fine that was.  Almost like one of those military magi.  Least he remembered his sense before anyone got hurt."  The highwaymen laugh heartily at their apparent leader's joke.

The orc still looks tense.  [Najafo] "Cen vi ptiesi jasv lott vhim?  O dunv xenv e ... Thomas ... Riverton ... lottid enzvhong on e xhoti."

The human looks over at the orc with a meanancing glare before turning his attention back to the group.  [Catela] "That'll be five silver a head plus the pick of the best of each wagon."
