I forgot DP9... Sad

Heavy Gear is well done and Gear Krieg is fun. Core Command was different and massively high powered. My favorite though,(likely because of my Mekton history) is Jovian Chronicles.

Their old almost supernatural supplements for Cyberpunk 2020 are worth finding too.

Don't feel bad.  Whenever I think about DP9 I feel like I'm going way back and bringing up those childhood memories they make movies about like The Sandlot.  It was a long time ago but still those guys really made settings you wanted to read about and see made into movie/TV fare.

Oh, ignore the comment about Shadowrun being they longest running science fiction RPG. Traveller holds that title, with the first edition dating from 1977.

I did mention that I didn't do any research to back up my claims  Tongue.

One of my faves is Savage Worlds, which I like for practically the exact opposite reasons I like MC.  Weird War II and Deadlands: Reloaded are my favorite settings.

I'm a big fan of Shadowrun, has a nice, evocative setting and one of the few RPGs that's tackled any form of Science Fiction (near future cyber-punk, if you didn't know) and has staying power. Without doing research to back up this claim, it might be the oldest RPG other than D&D and maybe Vampire that's still being published. Currently in it's 4th edition.

oldest to youngest the following very old games are still producing new editions (eg.T5) if you know where to look.
Tekumel, Traveller, gamma world,

Hmmm. actually I'm not sure about Tekumel...
Anyway all are nice odd settings that may meet criteria 1.

<- Proud owner of both green books.   Grin

I have my suspicions that JC is why the Jovians in Eclipse Phase are such dicks.

Games/setting that I own, have actually played, and enjoyed:

FC in a Bronze Age setting (one off game with my pregens PM me for my notes)
AD&D celts campiagn sourcebook (easy to convert to FC)
GURPS Fantasy (avoid the advanced combat rules though)
Tunnels and Trolls 5.5 (good fun with buckets of dice)
AD&D Planescape (see planescraft for FC version)
FATE 2e (we did a sequel to Gulliver's Travels. the system and setting are free online)
Space 1889 (I'd convert to another system though)
Call of Cthulhu
Wraith Oblivion (WOD 1st ed)
Cyberpunk 2020
GURPS Timetravel (google krononauts rpg for more)
Blue Planet 1st ed
Traveller Classic

"Alea iacta est" - The die is cast

Wow thanks guys, an awesome response if I do say so.

As it happens it was our FLGS's 20th birthday today, so thanks to their 20% discount offer and a very unexpected tax rebate I've picked up..

Eclipse Phase - I must admit the setting pulled me in straight away, and skimming the rules it seems like I'll be able to run this easily which will keep people happy
Deadlands - I've been waiting to pick this up for a while - what's not to love about gatling pistols and undead cowboys.
Weird War 2 - a slightly more "regular" setting but one that will appeal. They're Nazis, and zombies... they really need to die.

Not a bad bag to start me off.

Thanks again!

Eclipse phase is a great game, and I HIGHLY recommend picking up the GM screen either in PDF or hardcopy. I wasn't kidding when I say i can run it off the screen. All the rules and numbers you really need are there.

Also, look under the resources section of Posthuman's page for all sorts of useful tools.

Eclipse suffers from uninspired ruleset.  It doesn't enhance the setting.  It only handles it adequately.

I'm curious to know which edition Deadlands you bought.  Unlike Eclipse Phase, if you bought the classic version, the rules really enhanced the setting.  The Savage Worlds system handled Deadlands Reloaded well but if you ever played the classic, Reloaded falls short.  I've heard they fixed some of the complaints in the newest iteration of Deadlands Reloaded.

If you have the Savage Worlds rules set, I highly recommend Rippers.  It is a Victorian Horror setting.  It takes some classic monsters such as Frankenstein and adds a new twist to them.  Some great things about this setting are the Lodge rules, the plot point device dependant on which part of the world you are investigating, and Rippertech.

If you are interested in trying a new system,  I recommend nWOD.  I really like what they have done withnthe Hunter line.  The newest iteration allows for different degrees of play- from average characters to characters with powerful abilities.  What impressed me the most was how much more tactical the game got.

Another system worth looking into is FATE.  There are now several splinter rules depending on if you prefer sci-fi, fantasy, modern, pulp, or generic.

I'll never be able to play Eclipse Phase. Unfortunately, as much as I love them my gaming group are either lazy, busy or terminally stupid.
