I know that locked secret doors can be opened by use of Prestidigitation.  I'd imagine a secret door (once found) could be forced open by brute strength (making a helluva lot of noise in the process), but I'm overlooking the rules for this.  Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks a million,

I don't know of any specific rules other than the item damage section on page 155. You decide what type of material the door is made up, almost always hard, then how thick it is, and that determines the save they have to beat and how many failures they have to get.

I would imagine that there is some sort of damage immunity?  For example, if I'm hacking at a stone door 1 ft thick, that sword blade isn't going to do much..however a hammer or other blunt instrument might.  Is this factored in some how?  House ruled?

Thanks,

The Hammer Feat Tree I believe does double damage against objects, which would come in very handy in times like that. Otherwise, blunt objects will still do more overall damage because they have more AP or Keen than swords over all.

I also like to use the Athletics/Smash check from Spycraft 2.0. It allows you to make an Athletics check against anything with a Damage save less than your Strength score, forcing the object to make a Damage save against your Athletics check as the DC.

Simple solution to almost any question like this.

Decide on the skill (and possibly attribute) involved. Decide how hard it should be and look at Table 7.22: Sliding DCs. Have the player roll.

Frankly, Table 7.22 is the solution to so many problems. Need an opposed roll from an NPC you don't have stats for and don't want to look it up? Pick the difficulty and that's their roll. Players ask for info and you don't have the DC of the Knowledge check pre-set? Table 7.22.

Players want to throw a shoulder against a door or lift a portcullis or whatever? Table 7.22.

For most door busting though, look at the item damage rules. It's also what a battering ram is for.

I think the proponents of dealing damage directly to the door would do well to consider that there are hinges and locks that can often serve as weak points, as well.
