If so, it sucks to be you: James Oliver Rigney, better known by his pen name Robert Jordan, died today of primary cardiac amyloidosis.

Though his wife and cousin were apparantly made aware of the plot, the final volume in the main sequence of his Wheel of Time series, A Memory of Light, will perhaps now never be finished.

He's been on borrowed time for a while as he's been fighting a rare and invariably  fatal disease. He'll be mourned by fans everywhere. The publishers may attempt to finish his final novel posthumously, we'll see.  had been adamant that the book he was working on, "A Memory of Light" would be the finale of the Wheel of Time regardless of it's length. I've been reading this series since high-school and it saddens me to see one of my favourite authors pass.

Aw, man Cry. I hope they tell us how it ends, even if they can't finish the book.

It worked for Clavell in Shogun, certainly.  Hundreds of pages of story, followed by two pages of "and then here's what happened".

Of course, "worked" in this case is in the eye of the beholder.  For myself, I was really angry at the way Clavell wrapped it up.  But seeing as how ol' RJ's, you know, dead, I think I'd be more forgiving of an epilogue in which his brother chimes in and says "hey, here's what Rob said would happen at the end."

But it's all academic for me anyway.  I gave up around book eight.
