I have the Crafty Blog on my RSS reader so I don't miss anything and this didn't turn upEDIT: seems the RSS feed settings have changed, I have re-subscribed and all the blog posts are there.
Am I the only person here who thinks that the little stuffed dudes are like the characters from 9?
Doesn't this go in the opposite direction?
It's not like you're under any compulsion to use it

.....and that there'll be some overly powerful spells in the mix.

No need to fret. All the same considerations are going into this book that went into the core product. All this book is doing is expanding on the basic spellcasting toolkit. Yes, it adds new classes, spells, and other options but it also includes tons of ways to tailor casting in your games, whether it's to ratchet it back up (because some folks want that) or keep it restricted in new and interesting ways.
I take it there's no way of getting hold of the Spellbound Preview in the interim then?
