At least part of the reason is that classic is owned by Alderac, and 2.0 is owned by Mongoose.  Crafty having to license their own product in order to keep making it is less than ideal.  Also it lets them build on what they learned from making, running, playing, and listening to us yap about 2.0 and Fantasy Craft.

AEG owns Classic, Stargate (ie 1.5), and 2.0. Mongoose just printed the books from the second printing of the core on.

Correct - and when we left Mongoose we were forced to leave the stock behind, which is why th game is currently out of print. With that in mind, it seemed like a good time for a fresh start.

Why start a 3rd edition? The original was awesome. But when the 2nd edition came out I was happy. It has everything I need to play the game. Can anyone help me with this new concept and what it encompasses?

What Pat said. From what I've read in interviews Crafty is dropping the Giant Tool Box Which Can Run Anything concept and making SC3E very focused on the espionage genre. To me this sounds like a great deal of fun as the boys might decide to put out more Master Craft version like PulpCraft, StarCraft (joy), and Wormhole X-Treme.

On a side note, as I typed out SC3E it reminded me of a G36C and made me happy.

I suspect it'd be more likely called SpaceCraft given the other is a rather well regarded RTS game.

Yeah, maybe Activision wants to get into the tabletop rpg market.  It could happen.

Aren't they already in the board game market?  Why not tabletop RPG?

Licensed properties are something of a creative and budgetary morass.  I'm actually rather surprised the Crafty Controls decided to go with the whole Mistborn project.

His personal rep and history as a gamer likely helped too.

As for Starcraft, they already tried that with Alternity back when the Diablo bo for 3.0 came out. Did miserably.

I appreciate all the input for Spy Craft 3rd Edition. I look forward to buying the new books and enjoying the ongoing series.

Any chance we'll have a demo or promotional event possible this fall, even before early December?  Wink Wink

A promotional event, as in, a national one? No; we're simply not that big.

Demos are being run at cons around the country and world, on a case-by-case basis. If you want to organize one, best to contact Pat about it.
