So, a shield is a weapon. That means you could both Parry and Shield Block with it. Then you could take Shield Basics, Mastery, and Supremacy, to be really good with it. You could also take Darting Weapon to attack an extra time with it. If you wanted, you could be a Martial Artist or Edgemaster, and apply unarmed attack tricks to it as well. You could use a shield to do just about anything you wanted. You can even get a customized hurl shield, and with Hurled Mastery it would gain return, giving you a ranged attack.

I'd be interested to see how this turns out if you do it. Hopefully, it will not end up like Eric the Whiny Paladin above.

When the cartoon came out, Cavalier was not a class and Eric referred to himself as a Paladin.

He is definitely a Cavalier in the opening credits, and the class certainly had come out: it appeared in the Unearthed Arcana, the same supplement that introduced the Barbarian and the Thief-Acrobat.

I know Unearthed Arcana came out about 1985 and the cartoon came out around 1983. He may have been acting like a Cavalier in the credits but he was referred to as a Paladin by the other characters.

The Cavalier is in Dargon #72 in April of 1983.

Similarly, the Barbarian is in Dragon #63, the Thief-Acrobat is in Dragon #69.

The cartoon show began it's air run in September of 1983.

Eric was a Cavalier, not a Paladin.

Eric was a Cavalier, not a Paladin.

Indeed. And to my 12-year-old self, Eric was reason enough for me to not want to play a Cavalier.

Now, UA came out in 1985 and retroactively made the Paladin a subclass of the Cavalier.

Well, the Dungeon Master, even as a kid, struck me as a dick.

And, to me, the last episode script sort of bears that out.
