I love the aboleth as well! Didn't see any analog in the core book, so...

Do you have access to the old Dragon Magiazine article that expanded on the aboleth with about 7 other breeds/castes that filled out a whole multi-tier heirarchy for sun-less sea empires? Aboleth are awesome to start with, but that article took them over the top Smiley.

They also have some cool stuff in Lords of Madness, more fluff then other statlines.  Not as cool as that old Dragon article sounds either, but still worth a read if you have a buddy with the book.

I don't mean to be a pain.. but there is a thread for new (and old converted) creatures. Wouldn't it be easier to stick them there, still with the FCDB link of course. Less forum spam that way.

I don't have that article, but I am intrigued. I do have Lords of Madness, so if I see some other cool aboleths in there, I'd gladly convert those too.

Hi James. There's actually a specific reason why a single thread for new and converted creatures actually hurts promotion of the Fantasy Craft game. So, the short answer, I'd rather post individually and link to the article.

If you want the long version, I'd be happy to write a longer post in a separate forum.

Y'know, ever since seeing the picture in the Pathfinder Bestiary I've been wanting to make up something aboleth-like as a PC species.

I recall the Skum, the result of Aboleth tinkering on humanoids to produce subservient water-breathers that didn't require constant re-Domination to play Igor.  If one could justifiably or partially undo their psychic shackles, that would be a reasonable place to start with a PC species.  Perhaps humanity could be bred back into them (Skum Heritage?  Aboleth Legacy?), resulting in "sleeper" fish-monsters.  It could lend itself to a sort of, "Shadow Over Innsmouth" aesthetic, which suits the Aboleth perfectly.

Anyway, back to your topic.

The Skum was a standard monster in the 3.5 MM, it should be fairly easy to convert to a FC foe, and as it was low-ish level as I recall. it could almost be a species.

I meant actually aboleth-like.  As in three-eyed tentacle fish.

You're pretty much the expert on building such things, Silvercat.  However, in going with this, I'd suggest the following:

1) A generic large sentient fish species for undersea campaigns
2) Species feats for the aboleth that add more specific stuff (the focus being on slime, tentacles and mind control, possibly at the expense of physical stats).

And kudos on the monster, Veector.

Good point, but I think the fish could at least have tentacles to start with.

I was thinking that "generic large fish" would allow species feats to enable sentient giant sharks and other species besides, should people want them.  But as a playable choice, having nothing but your mouth and flippers to manipulate things with would get pretty limiting, so I can see where you're coming from with this too.

That's actually a good idea.  The question has been raised over on my Animal PC thread about how to go about pricing being an aquatic, though, so I think there are some questions that need to be addressed before such PCs can be made.
