It's 2011 and in about 23 months the world is supposed to meet some sort of doom.

I thought it would be rather amusing to post and chat about the things that seem to indicate that it may take place...

For instance here in good-ol' Arkansas 4,000 to 5,000 birds have turned up dead and there are nearly 100,000 fish (all the same species of fish) that went belly up in the river near another town — within days of each other.

Fish story with link to birds

As a buddy of mine posted on face book: "I've seen apocalyptic movies that start out this way."

(Personal note: I'm not buying into the misinterpretations of the Mayan's intent as well as the musings of the guy who really liked his hallucinogenics.)

There's this bunch, that can't wait until December 2012 for nothing to happen.

But, so help me, if they're right, come the morning of May 22, I'm so getting a newer car.

The Mayan calendar lines up perfectly with the the once every 20KB year event of Earth lining up with the gap in the Milky Way. That's what I'm waiting to see.

So would that be when the stars are right?

You are aware that if you ask the Mayans what's going to happen in 2012, they'll just tell you that the fifth world's long-count calender ends and the sixth one starts. That's it. No natural disasters, no impending doom, no end of existance. In fact, there may well be a party. They have no idea that the rest of the world is bracing for doomsday.

I have no idea where this apocalypse crap came from. It annoys me.

No, because there is no 20000-year lining up with any gap. Doesn't exist. No such animal. No gap. Unless somehow this refers to the gaps between the great spiral arms, and while the Solar System does pass through these gaps and the arms on occasion, it's on a much larger time scale than any 200 centuries - it takes something like a QUARTER OF A BILLION YEARS for the System to make a single revolution of the Milky Way.

Apparently that's the part of the story where, before the new world starts the gods come down to earth and futz around a bit. Y'know, tidy things up, remove creatures, add a few new ones into the mix, turn Justin Bieber into a pillar of salt. That sort of thing.

There's a fairly prominent musician here in NZ who's a believer, and he's openly mocked for it too.

I'm hoping for Shadowrun to at least get this one right.  Can't wait to turn into a troll. Cheesy

Meaning, of course, that you'll turn into an elf.

From the Met predicting balmy winters that turn out to be miserably brutal?

Sounds good so far.

I'd rather be an elf, but I'll end up being an orc.

9 out of 10 Min-Maxers agree: You'll be happy being an Orc.

While I know it's utter BS, I'd actually be pretty chuffed it there was an Apocalypse in 2012 - it's the only way I'm likely to live long enough to see how it all shakes out.  Unless chance has it that one of you guys is sitting on the key to immortality?

Jot my name down in that column as well. As someone whose main reason for wanting to live as long as possible is not missing something good, I'm down with a front row seat to the end. Wink

This is why I loved Shadowrun, its backstory, not that system itself.

Now while I don't believe that doomsday is coming, I do believe that there could be a change of somekind.  What that is, I don't know.  And for some, they will consider it the end of the world, as they know it.
