This year they're... surprising in many respects.

- No True Grit but Burlesque got a nod ::shakes head::

- Walking Dead (which, awesome) but no Breaking Bad - granted, there's only so much room on the ballet for one network, but still.

- Piper Perabo? Really? I'm not sayin' I didn't dig Covert Affairs's inaugural season (I did, a lot), but... really?

- The Tourist? Was there a random draw this year?

...and if Alice in Wonderland claims even one of those awards, I may have to grab a rifle and head over to the HFPA HQ for a little cognitive realignment. Because that movie was absolute trash - not mildly bad, mind, but full-bore-scattershot-to-the-logic-center awful.

Still, there's a lot to laud in there (Chris Nolan and Hans Zimmer + Inception, David Fincher, Aaron Sorkin, Trent Reznor and Atticus Russ + the Social Network, Christian Bale in the Fighter, etc.), and some welcome surprises (Red for Best Comedy or Musical, Emma Stone for Easy A, Katey Segal for Sons of Anarchy, etc.), so the reticle's not a full 180 degrees off - just a bit shaky. Let's hope they steady their aim before the envelopes are sealed.

The Yvonne Strahovski Action Front is.... displeased with these nominations. Volunteering to assist in potential cognitive realignment.

True Grit can't get nominated. For anything. It's a fine film, I'm sure, and I'm sure the cast is going to be great and the film will be immensely entertaining, but I just can't shake the rape of John Wayne's legacy--we can love it as a film and an homage of sorts, but awards for it will make me throw up in my mouth a little.

And which legacy are we talking about?

The violent drunk? The borderline fascist? The coward? The racist? The bad actor?

True Grit can't get nominated.

I would say that I love John Wayne, but that would go against being a John Wayne fan. He was amazing, his movies are excellent, I've been a fan since I was 4. However his True Grit both sucked and blowed. The characters were annoying and Wayne was trying too hard.

This was one of the very few times I have been excited about a movie being remade instead of fuming and aggressively lashing out at the house plants (as I am with Johnny $^#@&* Depp remaking The Thin Man).

And which legacy are we talking about?

The violent drunk? The borderline fascist? The coward? The racist? The bad actor?

This is also true.
