Well, there's no spam yet, but I can't imagine our newest member ChristmasNintendoWiiSale is here to discuss its latest campaign.

What if it is part of his campaign where his players are valiantly defending the Kingdom of Wii from its militaristic neighbors Playstationistan and Eksboxia?

One post in the "Adventure Companion in PDF" forum, but I notice it has 2 posts, so there's probably a turd somewhere else.

We have captcha running - have for over a year and a half. It just isn't very good, and it doesn't stop people who want to spam from manually filling it out.

My opinion is that the captcha is good enough to keep our spam level low.  If it gets worse we can re-evaluate.

Actually posting spammers are pretty rare.

But there are quite a lot of new members that are spammers, judging from the sites they post in their profiles. They just never post anything.

One thing determined spammer do is create "captcha call centers", where the software loads a page, and a person reads the captcha and enters a solution. Lather rinse repeat. Some of these even rely on unsuspecting dupes to solve captchas for them.

Is this an attempt at SEO madness, perhaps? There doesn't need to be a post, as long as there's a link somewhere to be crawled by Google, right?

What I want to know is how the ones who do post choose what thread to post in?  I log on in the morning, click "Show unread posts since last visit" and see a thread that is long dead have a totally pointless response from a spammer who will never post again.  It's like they randomly select how out of date they should post - "hmmm, page 17 sounds good".
