Is the new 3D really that good?

It can, if done right. There were parts of Avatar that made excellent, subtle use of 3D; on the other hand, movies like Piranha 3D were closer to the older style of 3D movie.

I've heard through the grapevine that they're looking at using some cutting edge 3D technology for The Hobbit. No specific details as yet, but it is said to blow Avatar out of the water.

Well they're remaking Star Wars using the new 3D (from the rumormill, Lucas was very negative about doing this but some pleeb in the company convinced him to check out a sample, telling him it's not like the old 3D, Lucas tried it and loved it).
Guess I should try it out when Tron 3D comes out. With that kinda budget, they should do a quality job.

I'm not convinced its going to work on older films or on just any film.To be honest the only film I enjoyed in 3D so far was Avatar.
I guess its gonna be the same with holographic movies...

3D is just another tool in a filmmaker's toolbox for telling their story.  When its use is planned from the beginning, Avatar, it can add to the experience; tacking it on at the end, Clash of the Titans, tends to end poorly.

If The Hobbit is planned in 3D from the get go, it can certainly add value.  (In any case, I'm going to see the new Tron in 3D.)

I've not been too big on the 3D so far. But having seen the Tron trailer in 3D a couple of times, then in 2D, it certainly felt lacking without the it.

3D is just another tool in a filmmaker's toolbox for making cash

Fixed! hehe
Honestly, I don't have a problem with it if it's GOOD 3D.

I'm not a huge fan of 3D in general, and I've been an outspoken opponent of the current movement. I intentionally avoided Avatar in 3D after Cameron screened 20-so minutes of it at Comic-Con a couple years ago and I found myself disoriented by the sheer volume of sensory data on the screen. I think the vast majority of movies don't need it, and I agree with most of what Roger Ebert has to say about the phenomenon. I'm especially skeptical of 3D conversion, putting me in the same camp as the King of 3D, Mr. James Cameron.

All that said, I want to believe 3D can be used for good. It's helping to establish a non-violable format to keep people heading into theaters (for now), and I actually like some of the schlock presentations. I even payed to see Treasure of the Four Crowns in its native 3D seven or eight years ago at the Alamo Drafthouse (worth it for the flaming beaver sequence alone). There are a handful of mainstream movies I think native 3D capture not only supports but enhances, and I'm taking a chance that Tron: Legacy is among them. It seems like a safe bet, given the nature of its visuals, but I'll be the first in line to scream about it if I'm wrong.

I actually had to introduce my sister and some friends to the original, and afterwards everyone sorta went "Wow, Chuck makes so much more sense now".

I squee every time I see that poster hanging on his wall. I've had the same one framed since about 1990.

And since it looks like this thread will continue for a while, and it was never really about Fantasy Craft, I'm gonna shift it over to the Off-Topic board.

It's going to be interesting to see how the reworked for 3D Star Wars films turn out.

If its done right, the Asteroid Chase from Empire and the Battle of Endor from Jedi should be awesome.

I just hope some of my small local cinemas are able to play the classics in 2D - I'd love to see them in a cinema.  If not I'll have to find someone to be my canary.

Watching The Hobbit in 3D should be interesting. All that lovely scenery will look even more realistic. Almost like living here Wink
