While I like the idea of a random element, and can live with it not being flatly tied to error range, the most important thing to me is that the check be simple - no extra dice rolled. So possibly...

"When a weapon's Recoil is greater than your Fitness, you take 1 point of subdual damage each time your attack check is less than the Recoil."

As your BAB goes up you'll get stung less often, but it seems like a pretty easy check.

Better wording~

Each time you make an attack check with this weapon, if the Recoil is greater than your Fitness and the attack check result you suffer 1 point of subdual damage. This damage ignores your DR but can be resisted.

Oh, I'm also expecting to tie recoil to fire modes in the table for weapons that have multiple speeds, so riding a brute doing single shots and RF 4 are entirely different experiences :).
