Ran this adventure last night.

The players were led to the vault entrance by an NPC, who didn't have information on what the vaults construction was and was sending them it to retrieve an artifact for the church.

Don't get me wrong I am all for out of the box thinking as long as it enhances the adventure.  I know one time we where playing this adventure and came across this book where everyone who looked into it had to fight a minor death(man those where nasty especially towards wizards in AD&D).
Well so we took the book with us and used it as a rather nasty weapon.  Killed a whole mess of wizards that where in one room.
