Apparently one person died of a heart attack, and a couple are critically injured, but that's it. Also, a Lemur at one of the local zoos died.

Otherwise it's just massive amounts of property damage (NZ$2+ billion worth estimated), a lot of which was caused by liquifaction of the very sandy soil large amounts of the city was built on. They're also still getting 4+ magnitude aftershocks 48 hours later, so it looks like this may be far from over.

Will be interesting to see what state the city is in when Metallica play there at the end of October...

I won't be watching them, even when they're playing across the road from me up here in Auckland Tongue

As for Chch, they're still getting hit by aftershocks. There were two last night that registered at 5+ magnitude. Also, the old house used at the beginning of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe now looks like this.

Holy Shit! ... That certainly changes any plans they might have had in using it for any sequels.

In case anyone is interested, GeoNet has a list of all recorded earthquakes in NZ during September. All of the quakes listed as 'Canterbury region' are part of this event.

Whee!

Hopefully everyone will be doing great too after the earthquake. It is actually a relief that the damage it cause is not that huge when it comes to casualties. Thank god that there weren’t more people that got hurt. In fact, that is an even more important manner as properties lost can be rebuild or to be gained again, but lost of life, that is irreversible and the effect that it can cause is massive.
