Rend NPC quality

So Rend states:

Each time the NPC hits an adjacent opponent, he may make a free attack against the same target.

Is this a recursive ability?  So if you hit with the free attack, do you get another free attack?

I'm assuming it is once-per non-free attack, but I don't see rules specifying one way or another.

A free attack never triggers another free attack (see sidebar on page 205).
