Modifying existing items
« on: July 23, 2010, 01:53:15 PM »
So, in the aftermath of the second printing errata our Unborn Mage has shifted to the Artisan Specialty, and now we are looking at the crafting rules.
The Crafting section labels it as Crafting / Modifying items, yet the isn't a specific reference to modifying an existing item.  For our case in point, we have recovered a magical longsword that just makes more sense for our Lancer to use.  But if it takes the grand total complexity of the one upgrade (Cavalry), then it is outside of our artisan's craft limit.  Essentially, it seems like it takes just as long to add an upgrade to an existing item as it does to build the whole item from scratch, and that just doesn't seem totally right.

Seems right to me.  The complexity of the weapon with the upgrade exceeds the crafter's knowledge of how to build it so they won't be able to do it until their max complexity increase.

Also, it isn't like adding one quality to the weapon is a piece of cake.  Cavalry weapons tend to have a single-edged, curved blade and heavy backs, so basically the crafter has to rework the entire blade to add the upgrade.

However, I would only charge them the difference in cost between the new and old blade in sp with the leftover amount converting to coin or reputation as normal.  This means they can still complete the blade faster than if they were creating it from scratch.
Don't follow your passion.  Take it with you.
