I think a lot of this, especially in games like Shadowrun and RIFTS, is justifiable due to the divergent timeline.

I only even take notice when a product says it's based on some real-world counterpart, and even them I'm more amused than anything.

I actually had a friend tell me they were offended by my own work, they didn't seem to realise that it wasn't supposed to be accuate [it was my players handbook for mastercraft fallout].

There were rage-induced bouts of "nuclear physics doesn't work that way!!" type exclamations.

This is what I'm talking about. There's a certain creator's license that allows you to step outside the bounds of reality - so long as you're not lying and saying you're staying in.

As a practicing Mormon, I was amused by White Wolf's hedge wizarding Nephite Priest group. On some level, it's always been intriguing to me how people deal with Mormons when they try and include them. I'm never offended by it, though, for pretty much the reasons Pat and others have mentioned--writers of fiction get to take license, and as long as it's not clearly meant as an attack, no worries. Heck, I'm going to include the Mormons tangentially in the VAO material, so I ought to allow others such license.

Heh, come to think of it, while drafting VAO material, I had to have a conversation with Glimmerrat about proper use of the word Warlock, and then used it wrong anyway.  Wink

Dude, if you want to go that route, try their oldWoD Gypsies book and the associated pseudo-gypsy Ravnos vampire clan

I'll take a moment to point out that our basic Army troops are on a similar training level to U.S. Army Rangers. We may not have all the flash bang toys, but we know how to use the ones we do have to maximum advantage.

We've slipped in the past few decades, but we still have the gear around to put a person with a rifle behind every tree.   Grin

Gah - I knew the person who wrote the first edition Ravnos book. I don't know how many of the mistakes were his, and how many were the White Wolf folks sticking their fingers in and stirring. Sad

The thing that pissed me off was that they changed his dedication - so that it was now dedicated to themselves.  Angry

As for some of their other books - as far as I could make out Rage Across the Amazon was based purely on movies, and one of the themes in Rage Across Appalachia was based on a fake folk song. (A bunch of folk singers made up the song, including variants... (this version may make me scream in the night - be warned!) because they thought that it would be funny. Tongue )

The Auld Grump, and in her hands, is a silver dagger....

Nope, I was wrong. Oceana only lists benefits for Aussies and Japanese characters.

Sorry Wolvie.

My favourite White Wolf regional sourcebook was Aurora Australis, for the sadly defunct and utterly brilliant Trinity RPG. Just the right hint of gonzo.

If it means we escape racial sterotyping by the book's author, that's fine by me Wink

Any futuristic sourcebook dealing with Quebec. Rifts, Shadowrun, what have you. Never offended, often good for a laugh though. Quebec always separates in the future. It's a rule of science fiction (rule #101 if you must know). There's a joke in there for current or expatriate quebecers.

Ooh, you mean the most racist sourcebook in history? Girlfriday is part Gypsy (Romany, not Irish traveller), and she finds that book hilarious. Maybe we could do a book for other ethnicities, too?  Wink

Like the Druid class in D&D. Maybe we could do a ‘Catholic’, ‘Muslim’, or ‘Jew’ class. On the other hand, maybe that’d just be a little too close to the knuckle, huh?

B5’s Earthforce Sourcebook, btw, states that:
- All Australians have the opportunity to become proficient with the Boomerang.
- All Scots have the opportunity to become proficient with the Claymore.
- All Japanese have the opportunity to become proficient with the Katana.
- The English are over-educated patronizing snobs who don't speak the ENGLISH language correctly.
- The Swiss can’t handle stress or hard work.
- The French are close-minded and intolerant.
- All Scandinavians are hot.
- Americans are vain and self-important.

This book is funny as hell, especially some of the unique feats.

. According to this sourcebook we affectionately refer to it as the 'telly tax'. In actuality at £100 per year it's a pain-in-the-ass, and people go to prison for not paying it.

In Austria it is about 120 Euro per year, though the real sad thing is, that austrian tv lacks any high quality production the BBC has. As of this month i will cancel my cable tv simply because german an austrian tv offers mostly trash. nearly everything i like comes from UK or US which means buying dvds or relying on the internet.
