News of Afghanistan mineral deposits have recently surfaced, the overall value of rare materials thought to be around $1 trillion.

And the war takes on a whole new front...

Well, at least no one can claim the reason we went there was because of the minerals.  We didn't even know they were there!

At this point, these mineral finds are not in fact good news for the Afghans.  Hopefully Afghanistan can move up from being another Somalia to being a Nigeria, rather than another Congo or Sierra Leone.  I am not optimistic.

Follow up article for completions sake.

Personally, I hope it does make a positive difference.  Course, that could be my overly naive side talking.  Tongue

I doubt there is anyone here who wishes greater ill upon the Afghans.  However, the ancestors of the people living there now went to the hills rather than live with oppressive/any government, so the odds of them being happy with the government they get are slim.  Add that to the micro and macro corruption in the government they do have and things do not look particularly rosy.  I want to be wrong, but I don't see Afghanistan exporting significant quantities of minerals inside 25 years, nor do I see the locals getting anything but buggered by nearly every mineral export scenario.

(Even our macro corruption is getting out of hand, and I hope my pessimism regarding our rough sailing ahead is excessive.)

Am I the only person who sees parallels between the problems with the current Allied occupation, and the 'issues' the Soviets faced about 20 years ago?

Funny how in Rambo 3 the Mujahideen with their horses and AKs are the good guys...

They were the good guys in The Living Daylights, too.

A for effort, D- for planning, and D- for execution.
