Has the wiki been updated with our best guesses for the 2nd printing? I'd like to update my raven and some house species feats.

Take from the Dwarf only give the bonus to environmental effects instead of disease and poisons

Sounds good. Thanks. I'll check it out tomorrow. Smiley

After thinking about it a bit, I think I'll give the Groll Great Fortitude as a bonus Feat instead. That should cover them in tough environments. Cheers.

First draft of the Marikon, master race of Jupiter  Shocked

Marikon
You are a Marikon. Once your kind were just another species of Jupiter, a race of humble fishermen and artisans. Then came the discovery of deposits of Iron metal, a material previously unknown on your world of wood and stone.

Armed with weapons of steel and a belief in the manifest destiny of your race, your ancestors conquered a large area of Jupiter and established an empire.

Now other races such as the Groll and Veith act as your slaves and serve in the vast cities you have built. Marvels such as Flying craft abound in these enclaves of civilisation and control.

Still, among your kind, there are those who do not agree with the harsh policies of your Grey Empire or its treatment of slaves. Ones such as yourself, who are prepared to become outlaws and adventurers in the lands beyond the empire.

Common Personality Traits: Impatient, Imperious, Self-disciplined.

Common Physical Traits: Medium build, Crimson skin, Crest of Black Hair

Example Names : Torgan, Merik, Dormag, Grandar.
Splinter Race Feats: None.

Type: Medium Biped Folk with a Reach of 1. Your maximum wounds equal your Constitution score.

•   +2 CHA, -2 WIS (1)
•   Base Speed: 30 ft. (0)
•   Enlightened Skill (Intimidate): Your maximum skill rank increases to your Career Level+5. Only the highest bonus from any enlightened ability may apply to each skill. (1)
•   Favored Classes:If you have more levels in either Courtier or Soldier than any other base class, you gain the next level's class abilities for that class. If you do not (or if you reach level 20 in either class), you instead gain [Feat A] as a temporary feat. You gain no other benefits from the next level such as skill points, vitality, base attack bonus, saves, etc. You may not combine abilites of this type to gain class abilities 2 or more levels above your current level. (3)
•   Flashy – Your Panache rises by 2 (2)
•   Natural Attack I:  You have bony spurs on your elbows and clawed hands with which you can inflict damage. (1)
•   Reviled: the disposition of non-race decrease by 10. (-1)

Will tidy it up more later.

*** EDIT: Added more description for the Markon Species ***
*** EDIT: Added Favoured Classes ***
*** EDIT: Added Flashy to cover Wealth ***
*** EDIT: Updated Favoured Classes to latest text ***

Morgenstern's pages under Mastercraft origin creation are up to date.  I redirected the fantasy craft ones to point to his.  No point in having two copies to sync up.

Thanks Blankbeard. The stuff you and Morg (and the other guys) put together is great. Having great time building my Species.  Grin

I've added a bit more detail to the Marikon but I was wondering is there any Origin option which gives a bonus to Lifestyle ?? As the ruling class in the Grey Empire, Marikon would be relatively wealthy.

Hmmm. Creating a Species this way gives good insight into how they tick. I'm thinking Marikon would be good Courtiers (like Roman senators) and Soldiers (Like Roman Legionairies) too. Cool.

After reading Morgs "Playing to Type" Thread, I've added Favoured Classes: Courtier and Soldier to the Marikon Species. I think it will help to re-enforce the Marikons place in Jupiters society.

From what i've read of ILOJ, Jovian society is strictly organised with the Markon in charge as officials in the cities or as soldiers in the army (and maybe Assassins or Captains). Veith tend to take the skilled and craftsmen type jobs (Sage, Keeper ??) and the Groll take the dregs (gladiators, army slave battilons, thugs, criminals).

The concept of a caste system was also quite strong (and interesting) in the GOR planetary romance novels by John Norman so I'm keen to use it in ILOJ. Not sure about some other aspects of the Gor books though LOL. You'll know what i mean if you ever read any of them.   Cheesy

Thanks.  Lots of people worked to get those pages in shape. Smiley  There isn't a species specific way to increase lifestyle but the specialties have Flashy and Thrifty, which I've slotted into species before.  One of those might work for you.

Happy to see the Play to Type stuff is of use in practice. You may want to check the most current text in the first post of the thread. Favored Classes got a little bit of rearanging to make it less punative to those who don't follow the script Smiley.

OK thanks, will do. I'll have a good look at it tomorrow.  Smiley

Now, just got time to paste the first draft of the next ILOJ Species, the TARGUL - Birdmen of Jupiter !!!

Targul
You are a Targul, part of a race of Winged Humanoids who inhabit the Skies over Jupiter.

The Targul dwell in Floating Cities, supported among the clouds by the gravity defying power of the semi-magical Lunth crystals . Whether these cities were constructed by the Targul or by scientists of the vanished First Empire is a matter of debate. The Targul, however, have enough knowledge to maintain the cities in their aerial positions.

Proud and aloof, the Targul regard the tensions between the Iron Lords and the subject peoples as petty squabbling. They are skilled in combat with Talon and sword and have managed to repel any attempts by the Iron Lords to seize their cities.

They live to glide on the wind and consider the sky to be their domain. Predatory by nature, they will raid any Skyship that comes within range.

For some reason (Exile perhaps?), you have left the Floating cities and now seek your destiny below the skies.

Common Personality Traits: Inquisitive, Proud.

Common Physical Traits: Medium build, Feathered Wings, Birdlike Features.

Example Names : Araak, Skree.
Splinter Race Feats: None.

Type: Medium Biped Folk with a Reach of 1. Your maximum wounds equal your Constitution score.

•    +1 DEX, +1 WIS (2)
•   Aloof: +2 error range on Impress and Sense Motive checks targeting other species. (- 0.5)
•   Base Speed: 30 ft. (0)
•   Keen Sight: Your visual range increments are equal to your Wis score x50 ft. You also ignore range penalties from the 2nd and 4th range increments while you’re aiming. (2)
•   Natural Attack I:  You have sharp Talons. (1)
•   Winged Flight 40 ft. (2)

*** EDIT: Added Attribute Bonuses and expanded Description ***

The Targul Species were not in the original Iron Lords of Jupiter setting but I felt that they fit the concept well. After all, whats a Sword and Planet setting without a few Winged Men ??

Here's what the Targul should look like: http://piratesofvenusmovie.com/images/klanganmd.jpg (image borrowed from a proposed S+P film website)

I was wondering...
Snake have you read the original Huygen's Cosmotheoros (1698)? It was one of the inspirations that (much later) got the Victorians and then sword and planet writers of the pulp era thinking. THere are some translations around on the net. It reads pretty odd to our 21st century eyes but you could skim a good english translation for a few ideas. Failing that I already have some notes in a .doc somewhere.
Anyway, just saying Smiley

Thanks Catodon. I've found a version online so I'll check it out. As you say, a lot of ideas about life on other planets in the solar system came up from writers such as HG Wells to Pulpsters such as Edgar Rice Burroughs and Leigh Brackett. Then through them to more modern writers like Michael Moorcock, Lin Carter and SM Stirling. Its interesting to see what inspired the Victorians originally too.

I think, in many ways, S+P is as much a Fantasy genre as Sword and Sorcery or High Fantasy. Obviously, with current scientific knowledge, we know that the Planets of the Solar system are not populated with intelligent humanoids on habitable worlds but its nice to imagine that they once were or could have been .

I have to say that Fantasycraft (with the Species work you and others have done) is proving an excellent way of re-creating these S+P species. I'm planning on moving on to statting out Sky Ships and NPCS fo this type of setting at some point so I appreciate any ideas or inspiration anyone may have. Thanks again.

The Noble Blood and Glory Bound Speciality abilities are out of date - they still reduce it to 40, rather then 20.

I would fix it myself, but whenever I try the formatting goes to hell for some reason, so I thought I'd leave it to someone who knows what they're doing.
