As written Death Throes is somewhat harsh, especially as unlike virtually any other damage source it doesn't scale; changing the multiplier doesn't remove that fault. As a rule of thumb, I'm implementing it here as a Wounding (Acid damage) extraordinary attack with a grade equal to the Menace level of the mission and a blast radius of 5 ft.

So that's 2d8 acid with a Reflex DC of 20 when you kill one personal like.

Also, here's the ship your sensei has packed you and your 3 NPC fellow students aboard for your ritual Blooding:

Pretty much. It had the right look for a Pred ship. The space forward of the engines is for the trophies of the hunt. Your sensi gets the solo room, you noobs bunk in the two dorm pods

Would you rule (on a case-by-case basis, of course) that the throes would be negated if you manage to kill one without opening it up? Like breaking it's neck in a grapple as opposed to chopping it in half with an axe?

Silent Step (Girlfriday)
(click to show/hide)

Silent Step is a warrior-scholar, mixing academic learning with applied knowledge. One of the few females to be seen on a hunt, Step is younger and smaller than most of her male brethren, but that doesn’t hinder her in any way. She is knowledgeable in the harmful and curative properties of the flora and fauna from dozens of different worlds, and she can cook up improvised explosives from seemingly nowhere. She is also a talented healer.

Ah, Friday and her chakrams.  Smiley No returning on the chakrams, though?

Leif, where you at, man?

Well, Return isn't on the list of upgrade qualities... but Mr. Anderson may make an exception.

Hunh. I thought for certain return was on there. I must have been confused since nearly every other upgrade is on there. Tongue

However, if you assume an Ogre Chakram costs 31s, then you could swap it for:

Orc Boomerang, upg: AP 2, Keen 20. 27s.

It's back to doing just 1d6 lethal instead of 1d8 because it doesn't get the scale boost from Ogre craftsmanship, and it would require the sacrifice of the Parry trick in favor of the Hurled forte, but it's there.

Or Andersen could just make up a special "returning" upgrade. a 50% cost bump sounds proper (same as accurate or finesse). Just thinking out loud.

Yeah, I thought so too, as I remember thinking "huh, so Xena's returning chakram is doable as a regular, non-magical item (discounting all the rebounding)." when reading the book.

For some reason, I decided to double-check before posting my nod for that notion, that if taking a chakram, to take returning.

FWIW, The boomerang mock-up is what I'd totally go for, as it gives that screechy buzz even when it misses.

It's interesting: currently the cord and return qualities have no inbuilt limit and are attached to weapons with identical ranges and perform similarlyComparing the two -- a physical connection allows recovery in "all" conditions but may logically be grabbed/snagged/cut for cord, a "wireless" connection allows a missed shot to be recovered but may be intercepted for return.

Oh, lets sat that 2 cord upgrades gives you return.

By and large, yautja clock in between the 7' and 8' mark, heights around the latter value being far more common as exemplified by the hunter on the right. Any thing less than 7' and you're considered a runt, which is never a good thing in a culture that glories in the misfortune of others.

Standing some 8'6", the fellow on the left of the screen is your sensei, Thunder Strike; for a male, he's considered freakishly tall. At first glance his imposing stature and barrel chest are decidedly feminine, except for some reason the females of your tribe are only as tall as the males, something that sees yours cop a bit of stick from the other tribes -- especially their matriarchs -- on the occasions of clanmoots and the like.
