If you didn't know before, I'm a huge Captain America fan. So, I was a little broken hearted when I heard and read that Cap was killed.

However, a new story arc involving the original Invaders (Cap, Namor, Human Torch, Bucky, Toro?) are going to be transported into the modern era. Reading my cousin's Invaders books were the ones that got me hooked into comics (in addition to the horror pulp stuff that he had as well.). I think this is how they bring Captain America back, and not pass the torch off to Frank Castle or the Winter Soldier (Bucky).

And the one single shining moment in the entire Marvel civil war...is for nothing.

It makes me sad.

I wouldn't exactly call it "shining".  It was more like the blatant advertising grab at the end of what sums up to be badly written fan fiction fostered off as pro work.  It's Marvel's version of "The Death of Superman", except without any attempts to disguise it as a world changing event.

I thoroughly enjoyed both The Dark Knight Returns and Watchman, but I often get the feeling they are two of the worst things that ever happened to Men in Tights.  My superhero attention tends to focus exclusively on the Dini/Timm DC cartoons for that reason.  You know the one thing that got my excited in comics in the longest time? Tiny Titans.  Hey, comics for kids.  Who'da thunk?

Somehow, "Facism is good! fighting for your rights is old fashioned, we should all be watched for our protection!" Really does not strike me as Marvel's shining moment. Actually, the end of Civil War (and ensuing Cap Death) made me all but begin boycotting Marvel's comics, at least until they undo some of the crap.

Sadly, I'm addicted to two of the comics. (X-factor, and Ant-Man) Fortunately, Marvel in their infinite suckiness, cancelled Ant Man. I even sent them a thank you letter for bringing me closer to my goal of being completely marvelless. I asked them to please do something abysmally stupid to X-Factor (with solid suggestions on how they could make it suck as badly as the rest of the Marvel universe..)..so I can quit them completely.

Me? bitter? nah...

Let's not forget that Civil War also completely screwed Tony Stark. He's had his manipulative streaks and egotrips, but he's also always had a solid amount of ethics backing that up. Now he's pretty much an evil conservative. Ugh.

(That said, the two recent Iron Man miniseries - Hypervelocity and Inevitable - were very good. Hypervelocity borders on brilliant, actually.)

Actually, the end of Civil War (and ensuing Cap Death) made me all but begin boycotting Marvel's comics, at least until they undo some of the crap.

Which for my money makes Cap's death the one great shining moment.  It was the only thing in the entire universe that actually changed as a result of the civil war.  Some things *looked* changed, but ultimately everything else returned to status quo (or something resembling it).  And after a real-time year, 18 or 19 'storyline' issues, and close to a hundred tie-ins, the idea that nothing had changed just about made me abandon Marvel, too (Sue and Reed even decided to 'work things out', for heaven's sake).  I'm certainly skipping World War Hulk.  Though I like my Moon Knight and Ghost Rider too much to drop them, and I discovered a certain guilty pleasure in Heroes for Hire.

But to the point, Cap's death was the biggest "Wow" plot development in the entire arc.  Captain America had been growing on me for a couple of years by the end of civil war, and I found it a very tasty story moment to see him (the "good guy") be the only one in the world who really takes it in the shorts over the civil war.  I only wish it hadn't been so hyped.  It should have come out of nowhere for maximum impact.

Of course he was going to get brought back somehow.  That's how these things always go down--and if he stayed dead, he'd stop making money for Marvel.  Of course, my acceptance of his inevitable return (doubtless just in time for a movie release starring Aaron Eckhart or Brad Pitt, I imagine) doesn't change that his return is ultimately really lame.

The really sad thing is that the basic kernel of Civil War was actually a fairly sound idea - even if they did nick it from Watchmen - and well in keeping with the way the US government in the Marvelverse has been shown to work, vis a vis the frequently touted Mutant Registration Act.

In fact, the Hero Registration Act was a perfect idea. No-one's privacy was going to be invaded who didn't want it to be, but if you wanted to be a Hero you put your name down, filled out the paper work, took the oath, got the training. There shouldn't have been the sort of problems there were.

Then they had to go turn Stark and Reed into panto villains.

I mean, dear god, a cybernetic clone of a Norse god killing a black man.

I doubt this "Invaders" series is the Marvel universe's method of bringing Cap back from the dead. Sure, Cap'll technically be back, but it won't be our Cap. As far as Cap's death being a publicity grab... not really. They've been building up to it in the Captain America title for a while now. And I'm sure there's already a plan in the works for exactly how the real Cap is going to return. I mean, if they weren't planning on bringing him back, why would he still get his own comic (even if it has been focused on his supporting cast since the Civil War started)?
I for one look forward to this.

We could also mention Blade killing every child in a New York public school because they'd been turned into vampires, and following it by blowing up a SHIELD helicarrier (Blade #1, which premiered in the middle of the civil war--far and away the worst issue of a major-company comic I've ever read), which didn't even get a mention in the main story.
